The English Premier League is the top division of the English football league system. Officially known as FA Premier League, or the acronym EPL for short, the league was founded in 1992 as a radical restructuring to replace the Football League First Division, the top level of English football since 1888. English Football fell into a low point in the 1980s, with financial difficulties, crumbling stadium infrastructure, and particularly hooliganism. English football teams were banned from European competitions after several tragic incidents, like the death of 39 fans in Belgium during the 1985 European Cup Final between Liverpool and Juventus and the death of 96 fans during the 1989 FA Cup semifinal between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest. Top clubs faced high costs and diminished revenues, with top players not even considering playing in England.

Given the situation, the English Football Association, as the nation's FIFA and UEFA-affiliated governing body for football, accepted the new league and the old Football League First Division was given the second tear in the English Football pyramid, maintaining the relegation/promotion mechanisms between tiers that now include the English Premier League as the top-flight, containing 20 clubs, and the former Football League under the English FA divided in three tiers of 24 teams each: The EFL Championship as the Second Division, the EF League One, as the Third Division, and the EF League Two, as the Fourth Division.

FA-affiliated teams also participate in other national events, like the Football Association Cup or FA Cup and the English Football League Cup or EFL Cup, also known as the Carabao Cup. The FA Community Shield is a Super Cup-style trophy that features the winner of the English Premier League and the FA Cup. In terms of international events, as members of UEFA, English Premier League teams qualify for the UEFA Champions League, the UEFA Europa League, and the UEFA Conference League.

What is the English Premier League?

The English Premier League became the country's top league after the top clubs broke away from the FA, gaining control over sponsorships and television rights, boosting their income. The English Premier League counts with 20 clubs participating each season, each earning an equal twentieth of the revenue share. The Premier League has become the strongest league in the world in financial terms and the most-watched, with an estimated audience surpassing 4.7 billion globally.

Current teams:

  • Arsenal - London
  • Aston Villa - Birmingham
  • Bournemouth - Bournemouth
  • Brentford - London
  • Brighton & Hove Albion - Falmer
  • Burnley - Burnley
  • Chelsea - London
  • Crystal Palace - London
  • Everton - Liverpool
  • Fulham - London
  • Liverpool - Liverpool
  • Luton Town - Luton
  • Manchester City - Manchester
  • Manchester United - Manchester
  • Newcastle United - Newcastle upon Tyne
  • Nottingham Forest - West Bridgford
  • Sheffield United - Sheffield
  • Tottenham Hotspur - London
  • West Ham United - London
  • Wolverhampton Wanderers - Wolverhampton

The season is played between the months of August and May, with a double round-robin format in which each club plays against each other twice, at home and away, for a total of 38 matches each, with the usual three points per win, one point per draw, and no points per loss. All teams are ranked by points, and in case of a tie in points, by goal difference, by goals scored, head-to-head score between tied teams, and goals scored away in the matchup. In case of a persisting tie that would define the championship or the qualification to other competitions, a play-off match played at a neutral venue would decide the tie-break.

The English Premier League includes relegation and promotion, in which after every season, the three lower teams in the table are relegated to the EFL Championship, with the top three teams in this second tear being promoted to take their place. The relegation system gives greater competitiveness to the bottom of the table, raising the stakes and making the league remarkably competitive. Only six teams have never been relegated: Arsenal, Chelsea, Everton, Liverpool, Manchester United and Tottenham.

The top four ranked teams qualify for the UEFA Champions League. Since the precious UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europe League winners qualify automatically, this earns additional qualifying spots in the case of English teams being the previous Champions. Additionally, the fifth team in the English Premier League table, along with the winner of the FA Cup, qualify for the UEFA Europa League, the continental second-tier club competition. The winner of the EFL Cup, or the sixth place in the table if the EFL Cup winner is ranked higher, earns a spot in the UEFA Europa Conference League, the third-tier continental tournament.

How to Bet on the English Premier League

BetPhoenix.ag not only offers you the best English Premier League Odds, but we also provide you with many helpful tools, like this English Premier League odds guide, to introduce you to the numerous moneymaking opportunities available when betting on the English Premier League betting lines, helping you improve your chances of winning.

English Premier League Point Spread

The English Premier League Point Spreads bets, similarly to other major sports like football, basketball, and baseball, are based on a handicapped margin of victory established on a projected game result. If an English Premier League betting lines show a point spread of 1.5 for an upcoming game, the favorite team (-1.5) must win by at least two goals for your bet to be a winner, while betting on the underdog (+1.5) can lose by one goal, tie the game or win outright for your bet to be a win. The .5 fraction is used to avoid a push in the wagers.

This is an example of a English Premier League Point Spread, as you would find it listed in BetPhoenix:

Team - Points Spread Odds

Manchester City -1.5

Arsenal +1.5

In this case, the -1.5 points spread indicates that Manchester City is the favorite to win by a margin of two goals against Arsenal. Conversely, Arsenal is the underdog and can lose by a margin of less than two goals. These are the likely results of this bet:

· Manchester City wins by two or more goals: Manchester City bettors win.

· Manchester City wins by one goal: Arsenal bettors win.

· The game is a draw/tie: Arsenal bettors win.

· Arsenal wins the game: Arsenal bettors win.

English Premier League Moneyline

English Premier League Moneyline is always the most straightforward betting option. Your pick reflects who you expect to be the outright winner of the game. A negative odds value indicates the favorite, while a positive value indicates an underdog. English Premier League Moneyline uses a $100 base American odds system, in which larger numbers indicate a stronger favorite or weaker underdog.

The two-way English Premier League Moneyline, in which the English Premier League betting lines are focused on either one of the two sides winning, removing the impact of a tie or draw, in which case the bet would be a push. There is also a three-way English Premier League Moneyline, in which the English Premier League betting lines offer odds values for the home team winning, the visitor team winning, or the match ending in a draw or tie.

This is an example of a Two-Way English Premier League Moneyline, as you would find it listed in BetPhoenix:

Team - Moneyline

Manchester City -150

Arsenal +130

In this case, if you bet to win $100 on Manchester City -150, as favorites, you would need to risk $150, while betting $100 on Arsenal +130 as an underdog, you would receive $130 if Arsenal wins the game. If the match ends in a tie, the wager would be a push, which means the bet is voided and refunded.

This is an example of a Three-Way English Premier League Moneyline, as you would find it listed in BetPhoenix:

Team - Moneyline

Manchester City -130

Draw +220

Arsenal +180

In this case, if you bet to win $100 on Manchester City -130 as favorites, you would need to risk $130. Betting $100 on the draw +220, you would receive $220 if the game ends in a tie. And betting $100 on Arsenal +180 as an underdog, you would receive $180 if Arsenal wins the game.

At BetPhoenix, our English Premier League odds will give you the best available Moneyline prices and the tightest point spread odds offered by any sportsbooks.

English Premier League Over/Under Totals

The English Premier League Totals bet is based on a projected final score that includes both teams, independently on which side wins. English Premier League Totals are represented in an Over/Under set, where you can pick if you expect this result to be over or under this estimated line.

This is an example of a English Premier League Over/Under Totals as you would find it listed in BetPhoenix:

English Premier League Totals – Manchester City vs. Arsenal

Total: 2.5

Over odds: -240

Under odds: +350

In this case, the English Premier League Over/Under of 2.5 means that if the match ends with a combined score of three or more goals, the Over wins; if the total score is two or less, the Under wins. If you bet to win $100 on the Over -240, you would need to risk $240 and win if the game ends with 3 goals or more. Betting $100 on the Under +350, you would receive $350 if the game ends with 2 goals or less.

English Premier League Parlays

English Premier League Parlay is a wager type in which two or more English Premier League betting lines are combined to form a single wager with a considerably higher payout. However, all selected English Premier League betting lines must win for the parlay wager to win. You can combine point spreads, moneylines, over/under totals, and other wagers. You can also combine favorites and underdogs. The more bets you add to your English Premier League parlay, the odds multiply accordingly in your favor.

Using the example, a two-line English Premier League Parlay could be as follows:

Manchester City -150

Manchester City vs. Arsenal Total: Under 2.5 +350

By combining the Manchester City Moneyline -150 and Total Under 2.5 +350 for the Manchester City vs. Arsenal game on a 2-team parlay risking $100, the combined odds would be +650 with a payout for this parlay of $750.02, about 6.5 times your bet, instead of risking $100 to bet on each separately.

English Premier League Prop Bets

English Premier League prop bets are one of the most exciting ways to bet on the outcome of the games. The most popular English Premier League Prop Bets include many possibilities. Team prop bets include lines to bet on which team will score first, how many shots on goal will be made, how many corner kicks will occur, how many cards will be sanctioned, and a long etcetera. Player props bets include who will score a goal during the game, who will score the first goal of the match, who will score multiple goals, how many shots on goal a player will make, etc.
