Bet on the Yankees

In winning eight of their last 10 games, the Yankees now have a shot at the playoffs. A recent surge by their pitchers gives hope to the franchise even while the trade deadline is on hand.

In yesterday’s game, the first of this series, the Yankees ended up winning 6-3 and pitcher CC Sabathia snapped his six-start winless streak allowing just two runs in 6 2/3 innings. If they also win tonight’s game, it would be their third consecutive series win.

The Yankees’ pitchers have been on a roll as of late, Sabathia, Tanaka, Michael Pineda, Ivan Nova and Nathan Eovaldi have all been pumping out great performances and executing well on the mound. Tonight, the leading ERA on the road pitcher in the majors, Tanaka, takes the mound.

Bet on the Astros

Lance McCullers (5-4, 3.33) is scheduled to start for Houston tonight. McCullers allowed one run and struck out 10 in a season-high eight-plus innings in a win over the Angels in his previous start. It’s McCullers’ first career appearance against the Yankees, having missed the season-opening series in the Bronx because of shoulder soreness.

The Astros who began the series with the best pitching in the majors since May 1 with a 3.36 ERA, however, it was the Yankees that bested the night. Houston starter Doug Fister (10-7) allowed nine hits and six runs, which both tied season highs, in 4 2/3 innings for the loss.

Gonzalez put in a solo homer in the eighth for his first career multi-home run game. He hit the first one while batting as a right-hander and the second one from the left to make the switch-hitter the first Houston player to homer from both sides since 2006. The Astros loaded the bases with two outs in the eighth, but Dellin Betances struck out Jason Castro on three pitches to end the threat.
