Bet on the Red Sox

The Red Sox’s offense has carried them forward to victory up to this point. And, later on tonight, their heavy hitters will go to bat once again hoping to notch another win against Rick Porcello who is 8-2 with a 3.93 ERA.

After doing fairly well in April, going 5-0 with a 2.76 ERA, Porcello has steadily dropped his numbers since. In May, he went 2-2 with a 4.65 ERA , while this month he’s 1-0 with a 4.45 ERA. And, in his last outing against the White Sox, he allowed four earned runs on eight hits in the Red Sox’s 8-7 win.

One could say that the offense saved the day because Porcello clearly didn’t. Thank goodness for Boston that David Ortiz will be going to bat as he’s  11-for-29 (.379) career batting line with three doubles and 14 RBI against Rays starter Chris Archer.

Bet on the Rays

The Rays’ starter, Chris Archer, also doesn’t have anything to boast about. With a 4-10 (4.70 ERA) record, he’s just squeaking along and will have major difficulties tonight. With a loss in each of the past three outings when he’s started, including a 6-1 loss to Cleveland in late June, he’ll going to have to pull a rabbit out of his hat to get through tonight without much damage.

The problem is, even if Archer does get some traction the Rays’ relievers also don’t have much punch in them. Tampa Bay’s bullpen is 24th in the majors with a 4.33 ERA and owns the third-highest home-run-per-nine-innings ratio with 1.92.

This being the case, Tampa Bay will have to rely on their batters, hoping they can do some damage against Porcello and stay in the game. Logan Forsythe is 5-for-14 (.357 ) lifetime with a triple and two walks against Porcello
