Nigeria National Team Preview and Odds to Win Group F

You are here

Nigeria National Team

Nigeria is listed with odds of 9-1 to win Group F in the 2014 World Cup. They are listed well behind the favorite in the group Argentina and they are also listed behind Bosnia-Herzegovina. They are ahead of Iran who is the longshot in Group F. Let’s take a look at the Nigeria squad and 2014 World Cup picks.

It was ugly for Nigeria two years ago as they didn’t even qualify for the 2012 African Cup of Nations. Things changed when they brought in Steven Keshi and this year the team won their first African title since 1994. Keshi led Togo to the World Cup in 2006 but he never got to coach that team at the World Cup as he was fired before the tournament.

The Super Eagles made it out of the group stage in 1994 and 1998 but that was as far as they got. They didn’t make it to the round of 16 in 2002 or in 2010. They may not get out of the group stage this time either as they are the third choice in the betting.

Nigeria qualified for the 2014 World Cup by winning their group which meant a two-legged playoff against Ethiopia. Nigeria won easily 4-1 on aggregate.

Nigeria is led on offense by Liverpool’s Victor Moses. They don’t have a lot on defense so they count heavily on goalkeeper Victor Enyeama.

Schedule

16 June 2014

Iran vs. Nigeria, Arena da Baixada, Curitiba

21 June 2014

Nigeria vs. Bosnia-Hercegovina, Arena Pantanal, Cuiaba

25 June 2014

Nigeria vs. Argentina, Estadio Beira-Rio, Porto Alegre

Picks

Many people think that Nigeria has a chance to get out of Group F and finish second behind Argentina. I don’t think that is going to be the case as Bosnia-Herzegovina is vastly underrated. Nigeria should beat Iran but I don’t see them winning any other matches and that means they don’t get out of the group stage in the 2014 World Cup.
