Bet on Atletico
Los Colchoneros drew first blood in the first match, defending their home pitch and coming away with a 1-0 victory at Vicente Calderon. This obviously puts them at an advantage with one goal ahead going into Allianz Arena where they can put all their efforts into scoring a valuable away goal.
In the early minutes of that first match, Saul Niguez scored a brilliant goal after having passed defenders Juan Bernat and Xabi Alonso. Though Bayern responded well, Arturo Vidal’s counterattack fell short of its mark a few minutes later.
Atletico has positioned itself this year behind head coach Diego Simeone’s iron clad defensive strategy that’s hard to crack. Though Bayern did have a few clear opportunities to score, the task is far from easy. Atlético have conceded just five goals in 11 Champions League matches. Heading into the second game, the defense is likely to have Diego Godín back in the fold. Godin has returned to practice following an injury that kept him out of the first leg.
Atletico Madrid predicted starting lineup (4-4-2 formation): Oblak; Juanfran, Gimenez, Savic, Luis; Niguez, Gabi, Fernandez, Koke; Torres, Griezmann
Bet on Bayern
Though Bayern dominated most of the second half in the first match, Pep Guardiola’s squad was unable to score a valuable away goal and now finds itself in a tricky situation of being forced to score at home without an advantage of having an away goal. Atletico’s goalkeeper, Jan Oblak, denied David Alaba and Arturo Vidal on two clear occasions and held tight through all the game.
Bayern is also coming into this match after not being able to clinch the Bundesliga title on Saturday in their match against Borussia Monchengladbach that ended in a 1-1 draw at home. Regardless that Bayern is the clear leader in the league, they’ve been seemingly unable to score a victory in the UEFA Champions when it counts. Last year they could not get past Barcelona after losing 3-0 at Camp Nou and in Guardiola’s first season, Bayern was crushed 5-0 by Real Madrid in the semifinal.
Guardiola has been criticized because of his decision to not have Thomas Muller on his starting lineup in the first match. Muller has been Bayern’s lucky charm in many of their games, including their victory over Juventus in the last series. Bayern is counting on the advantage that Allianz Arena gives them. In the last 11 Champions League matches at home, they’ve won every one of them.
Bayern Munich starting lineup (4-1-4-1 formation): Neuer; Lahm, Martinez, Alaba, Bernat; Vidal; Costa, Thiago, Müller, Coman; Lewandowski.
Game Predictions: Guardiola will switch his strategy up and start with Muller on the starting lineup. They’ll undoubtedly have the advantage on their home pitch but it will not prevent Atletico from scoring. Because Atletico has the one goal advantage and score an away goal, they’ll win on the aggregate. It’s Atletico Madrid heading to the final.
