UEFA Champions League Highlights, Scores and Stellar Plays

Week 1 in the 2015-16 UEFA Champions League is in the books, and there was plenty of action to tell from all the matches.

A few notable games saw top teams fall from their perch, as both Manchester United and City lost their matches. Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Chelsea all won their first game, while defending champions Barcelona had to settle for a draw.

Here are some of the best highlights for this week:

Roma vs. Barcelona

The highlight of the week has to go to Roma’s Alessandro Florenzi who scored an incredible goal almost from the halfway mark, that caught Barcelona goalkeeper by surprise.

Zenit vs. Valencia

Zenit’s striker, Brazilian Hulk scored two goals against Valencia at home, which won them the match 3-2.

PSG vs. Malmo

PSG newcomer Angel Di Maria convinced Parisian fans, scoring his first goal for the French team which helped in the 2-0 victory over rivals Malmo.

Chelsea vs. Maccabi

Chelsea pummeled rivals Maccabi 4-0, in a game that saw the English team play way more convincingly than their performance in the Premier League.

Olympiakos vs. Bayern

The German powerhouse team won by 3 goals to nil against a weaker Greek team Olympiakos. Bayern’s Thomas Mueller scored his 30th goal in the Champions League. It was the 50th loss by the Greek team in UEFA Champions League play, only being edged out by Porto who have 51 losses.

Arsenal vs. Dynamo Zagreb

The English team fell 2-1 in a not-so-surprising loss against Croatian Dynamo Zagreb. This loss marked the 50th for Arsenal coach Arsene Wenger in UEFA Championship League tournament play.

Real Madrid vs. Shakhtar

Real Madrid’s power striker, Cristiano Ronaldo scored his 80th goal, passing rival Barcelona’s fellow striker Leo Messi’s record thus becoming the highest scorer in the UEFA Champions League. Real Madrid outscored Shakhtar Donetsk 4-0. It is now the record-breaking 19th successive appearance by the Spanish team. Real Madrid’s head coach, Rafael Benitez, became the second coach to lead six different clubs in UEFA Champions League history according to uefa.com

PSV Eindhoven vs. Manchester United

Manchester United not only fell against PSV Eindhoven 2-1, they also suffered a loss when defender Luke Shaw broke his leg in a harrowing play that will take him out for the season.

There were also three teams that made their debut appearance in the group stage, Borussia Mönchengladbach, Astana, and Gent. However, Borussia and Astana lost their matches and Gent tied 1-1 at home against Lyon.

Week 2 of the UEFA Champions League playoff round will begin on Tuesday, September 29 and continue the following day with 16 games lined up in both days.
