Russia 2018 World Cup Group D Predictions, Odds, and Analysis

The 2018 Russia World Cup group D on June 16 pits four great teams in Argentina vs Iceland and Croatia vs Nigeria. Read on for all the details!

World Cup 2018 Group D Predictions

Argentina vs. Iceland

  • Date: Saturday, June 16
  • Betting Odds: Argentina -274 vs. Iceland +1039 – Draw +389

Argentina: It is Messi’s last shot at winning the World Cup as he himself recognizes. But, the 2014 runners-up almost didn’t qualify so this squad has a lot to prove to its country.

Even with one of the best players in the world and a small army of talented players, Argentina always seems to struggle to win important games. The squad led by Jorge Sampaoli has only won one game in four official matches and remains a big question mark in this World Cup.

Players like Sergio Aguero and Gonzalo Higuain and Angel Di Maria need to step up to take some of the burdens off of Messi’s shoulders. However, in a group that’s considered the toughest of all this Argentinian squad could very well end up sinking like the Titanic.

Iceland: This team could be the dark horse of the World Cup. Iceland raised plenty of eyebrows after knocking out England of the Euro 2016 and qualifying for this competition ahead of Croatia and Ukraine.

Even if this team doesn’t have as much, if any, talent as the rest of the teams in this group it makes it up with plenty of grit and determination.

Nobody is expecting them to make it out of the group stage but if they manage a draw against Argentina in the first game, it could give them motivation enough to pass through.

Prediction for Argentina vs. Iceland: Most people are expecting the South American squad to win this game. But, as we’ve seen before Iceland has shocked even the best of teams.

Nevertheless, Iceland has been slipping as of late and have won only two of their last six friendlies. Though they’ll give a good fight against Argentina, they’ll be defeated 3-1.

Croatia vs. Nigeria

  • Date: Saturday, June 16
  • Betting Odds: Croatia -111 vs Nigeria +367; Draw +251

Croatia: Despite a hoard of talent that includes the likes of Luka Modric, Mario Mandzukic, Ivan Rakitic, and Ivan Perisic, Croatia had to fight through a playoff for the second straight time to make the World Cup.

Croatia, however, has reached the World Cup finals on four occasions and reached the semifinals in 1998 when they lost to hosts France so it has a long history of being an extremely competitive team.

Throughout the qualifiers, this squad has been tough to score against and they gave up just four goals in 10 games only surpassed by Spain and England.

Nigeria: Among a group of tough opponents, the Nigerians were the first team from Africa to qualify. And they did so in a group that included Cameroon, Zambia two regional champions.

They defeated the current champion, Cameroon, 4-0 and also Argentina 4-2 in a friendly in Russia.

This team also has six of the last World Cup finals under their belts, so thinking they are easy pickings would be a big mistake.

They are not without controversy, however, and after being penalized with a loss for fielding an ineligible player in their game against Algeria it glimpses many unknowns in this team’s organization for this competition.

Prediction for Croatia vs. Nigeria: Croatia’s defense will be tough for Nigeria’s offense. On the other side, Croatia hasn’t scored too many goals throughout the qualifiers which means this might not be a high scoring game. 1-1 Draw is the final result.
