World Cup 2018 Group E

Brazil vs. Switzerland

  • Date: SUNDAY, JUNE 17
  • Betting Odds: Brazil -255 vs Switzerland +851 – Draw +396

Brazil: Whatever ghosts still haunted the memories of Brazil’s 7-1 loss to Germany on their home soil seem to have disappeared and the Verde Amarela is back to its gloried strength.

Brazil was the first country, in fact, to clinch qualification for Russia 2018 and left a track record of great victories on the way including a 3-0 win over Argentina.

It was coach Tite’s appointment in 2016 that seemed to light the fire in this squad’s bellies. Under his leadership, Brazil has earned 13 wins, three draws, and only one loss.

Star player Neymar Jr. should have recovered from his foot injury in time which means the team will be back at full strength and playing the storied “Jogo bonito” of the past.

Brazil is not only the favorite to win this group but is also among those expected to win it all at +400. Needless to say, this squad is not short on talent; with such players as Neymar, Firmino, Willian, Coutinho, Douglas Costa, Gabriel Jesus, Paulinho the only question for Tite is to decide who will play.

Switzerland: It’s a pity the Swiss’ first game is against Brazil but at least they can sharpen their teeth against one of the best opponents in the World Cup to prepare for whatever opponent follows.

Switzerland qualified rather easily in a group that wasn’t all too competitive (Hungary, Latvia, Faroe Islands, Andorra). Regardless, whatever motivation this could have mustered will be needed in their first game against Brazil.

About much as they could hope for is to hold back Brazil’s attack enough time for them to capitalize on the odd opportunity for scoring. The fact that their top two scorers in qualifying were defenders doesn’t bode too well for how things can turn out.

Prediction for Brazil vs. Switzerland: The Brazilians have a lot to prove and make up to their fans. All of Brazil and countless others are expecting Brazil to make it all the way to the final, if not, win the 2018 World Cup. They’ll do whatever they can to make a statement of this game. Brazil wins.

Costa Rica vs. Serbia

  • Date: SUNDAY, JUNE 17
  • Betting Odds: Serbia +104 vs Costa Rica +325 – Draw +235

Costa Rica: Though there are high expectations for Costa Rica based on their Brazil 2014 performance when they lost to Holland in a penalty shootout in the last eight, the Costa Ricans have no assurances they can repeat their success in Russia 2018.  The goal is to get through to the knockout stage which in itself is a win.

It’s Costa Rica’s success on the world stage that opened the doors for national players to play in international leagues. Most notably, Real Madrid goalie Keylor Navas can credit his journey to the club to his performance in Brazil.

Many of the 2014 squad are returning for this year’s World Cup, but the Central American nation has not impressed in their friendlies with a notable 5-0 beating by Spain, 1-0 loss to Hungary, and 2-0 to England.

Serbia: The European nation impressed in qualifying, defeating tough competition that included the likes of Wales, Austria, and the Republic of Ireland. Serbia is hoping to break out of the group stage, something which they last accomplished 20 years ago.

The talented squad scored the most goals - 20 - in their group, with Aleksandar Mitrovic leading the way with six goals. Branislav Ivanovic (Zenit St Petersburg) is also an experienced defensive player who sharpened his teeth at Chelsea and is the backbone of the defense.

There are open questions over Serbia’s leadership; having qualified for the World Cup, Slavoljub Muslin was nevertheless removed as the coach with Mladen Krstajic placed as a temporary substitute.

Prediction for Costa Rica vs. Serbia: The fact this tournament is in Europe hands Serbia a big advantage. Most players on the Serbian squad are used to playing in Europe and have a history of being effective. Players like Aleksandar Kolarov, Nemanja Matic, Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, and Aleksandar Mitrovic are great.

Costa Rica is not a pushover, however, and tends to grow in these types of games where they’re the underdog. Serbia is the favorite at +104 and it’s likely the best bet. Costa Rica will play hard and keep the game close, but Serbia will strike a goal and win.
