MLB Baseball Wild Card Weekend Battles, Which Teams Get the Spots?

All of the Divisions in MLB baseball are wrapped up already, which means that everyone is looking forward to which teams will grab the wild cards and make it to the postseason.

First, let’s state what’s already decided. The Chicago Cubs own the National League’s best record and topped the NL Central. The LA Dodgers and Washington Nationals own the NL West and East, respectively. As far as the American League goes, the Texas Rangers top the AL West, the Cleveland Indians won the AL Central and the Boston Red Sox capped the AL East.

Now, this obviously sets up a storm of a competition which is good news for everyone as teams will do what’s possible to seal the deal in the upcoming weekend.

NL Wild Card Race

Currently, entering Thursday, it’s a close race between the Mets and the Giants, however, the Cardinals still have a shot being only one game behind the Giants for the second wild card spot.

The Mets’ road ahead has them pitted against the Philadelphia Phillies. Although New York seems to have the advantage, being 10-6 against Philly, they’re also hampered by injuries to its starting rotation. The good news is they have Noah Syndegaard and Bartolo Colon lined up to start.

As for the Giants, there’s one more game against the Rockies which is followed by a three-game series at home against Los Angeles. Although LA has already clinched the division, they’ll be fighting for home-field advantage in the division series. San Francisco is hanging on for dear life but they’ve lined up Madison Bumgarner and Johnny Cueto to start on two of the remaining four games; and, though LA won’t necessarily rest on their laurels, having won the division might favor San Francisco.

The Cardinals’ road ahead isn’t as harrowing, having to play a game against the last-place Cincinnati Reds and three more against the Pittsburgh Pirates. However, the Cardinals also have lost twice to the Reds in three games played and carry a 4.36 ERA.

Wild-Card Prediction: We expect the Mets to clinch the No. 1 berth, and the Giants will take the second spot.

AL Wild Card Race

It’s a boiling hot cauldron in this race, with the Blue Jays holding the top spot, followed by the Orioles, Tigers and Seattle Mariners.

The Blue Jays have one more game on Thursday at home against the Orioles before heading to Boston for a three-game series against the Red Sox.  Marcus Stroman takes the nod in Thursday’s game with a good shot at going the distance and getting the job done. Meanwhile, Baltimore starts with Ubaldo Jimenez who’s won two of his last three decisions. If the Jays win Thursday they face a Red Sox team that might be content to hold back. As for the Orioles, they’ll be heading to New York for a three-game series against the Yankees whom they’re pretty evenly matched with.

The Tigers play the Indians on Thursday and then head to Atlanta to face the Braves for a three-game series. This favors the Tigers as the Braves are at the bottom of the NL East.

Finally, the Mariners play four games at homes against the A’s of Oakland. Seattle has won five of its last seven and is 10-5 against Oakland this season but it’s still too much of a stretch to think they’ll get a spot in such a small window of time.

Wild Card Prediction: The Blue Jays get the No. 1 spot and the Tigers the second.
