Pittsburgh Pirates Analysis (40-46, 19-24 away)

The Pirates find themselves in 4th place in the NL Central, seven games behind the division leading Milwaukee Brewers and 4.5 games behind the Cubs.

Before the start of the series, Pittsburgh had won three straight games and now, they will be looking to reduce the distance between themselves and the Cubs by winning all three games.

For the season, the Pirates have had consistent play from their pitching staff who have a collective ERA of 4.21 for the season, which is good for 13th in the league.

Their starters in particular have played well giving the team 41 quality starts, which is 9th in the league.

Batting has been another story altogether for the Pirates who have a .241 batting average, which is 26th in the league, and their 359 runs scored is the 25th best in baseball.

Andrew McCutchen, who was almost traded in the offseason after a disappointing 2016 campaign, leads the team in all major batting statistics. For the season, the 2013 MVP has a .289 batting average, 16 homeruns, and 49 RBIs.

Starting Pitcher Analysis

Jameson Taillon will get the start against the Cubs on Sunday. In 11 starts, Taillon is 5-2 with a 2.73 ERA.

The second year player has been pitching well for the Pirates this season and hasn’t allowed any runs in his last two starts.

Pittsburgh Trends

  • The total has gone UNDER in 5 of Pittsburgh's last 6 games
  • Pittsburgh is 14-5 ATS in its last 19 games on the road
  • Pittsburgh is 5-2 SU in its last 7 games on the road

Chicago Cubs Analysis (42-43, 23-18 home)

After winning the World Series last season, the Cubs were favored to win it again this year, but so far, the team hasn’t resembled the same team that dominated the rest of the league last year.

Chicago has been hovering around .500 for most of the season and will need to play better in the second half of the season if they want to make the playoffs.

Team president Theo Epstein told reporters this week that he had no intention of making any moves before the trade deadline because this was basically the team that won it all last year. He added that he thinks the team will turn things around before the season is done.

Pitching wise, the Cubs are still one of the best in the league, with their pitching staff having a combined 4.12 ERA, which is 10th in the league.

However, their batting hasn’t been up to par compared to last year, and the team currently has a .239 ERA, which is 29th in the league.

Starting Pitcher Analysis

Jon Lester will take the mound for the Cubs on Sun day. For the season, Lester has a 5-5 record and a 3.94 ERA.

After four solid outings in which he didn’t give up more than three runs, Lester was tagged for five runs in his last start.

The Cubs will be hoping he can get back on track against Pittsburgh on Sunday.Cubs Trends

  • Chi Cubs is 2-4 SU in its last 6 games
  • The total has gone UNDER in 14 of Chi Cubs's last 19 games
  • Chi Cubs is 3-8 ATS in its last 11 games at home

Pick and Predictions

Despite their talented roster, the Cubs have been the model of inconsistency this season, which is why I’m picking the Pirates to get the win.
