Mets Analysis

The visiting Mets come into this series having lost four of their last six games, three of which came against the NL East leading Washington Nationals, costing them them a chance of closing the gap on their division rivals.

The Mets will be trying to put the past week behind them and get back to winning games, but have a tough road ahead of them against the Dodgers, who have been playing well lately.

New York will be facing the top of the Dodger’s pitching staff in this series and need to improve their batting average of .249, which is 20th in the league, to have a decent chance of winning this game.

Just last night, though the Mets lost 6-10, Jose Reyes and Gavin Cecchini hit homers against Kershaw, the former hit two while it was the latter’s first home run in the majors.

Starting Pitcher Analysis

The Mets will give Robert Gsellman the start on Tuesday. For the season, Gsellman is 5-4 with a 5.50 ERA. Prior to his last start, Gsellman had won three consecutive starts, allowing three total earned runs.

In his last start, Gsellman gave up 11 hits and seven runs to the Nationals in five innings, in what ended up being his worst start of the year. He will be looking to rebound against the Dodgers, but will also need some run support from his teammates.

Mets Trends

  • NY Mets is 1-4 ATS in its last 5 games
  • NY Mets is 1-4 SU in its last 5 games
  • The total has gone OVER in 6 of NY Mets's last 7 games

Dodgers Analysis

The Dodgers were expected to cruise to the NL West title this year with the San Francisco Giants expected to regress. However, things haven’t worked out as planned because few expected the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks to be very good this year.

With the Rockies and Diamondbacks exceeding expectations, the Dodgers find themselves in third place in the division, one game behind the Rockies, who have the division lead. Despite winning nine of their last 10 games, the Dodgers can’t afford to drop games to teams they are expected to beat if they want to keep up with the Rockies.

The Dodgers, whose pitching rotation has the best ERA in the league, suffer from inconsistent batting, which has hurt them in close games and wasted quality starts by pitchers like Clayton Kershaw. Even though the team is the sixth best run scoring team, they have a .251 batting average as a team, which is good for 19th in the league.

Dodgers rookie Cody Bellinger became the fastest player to reach 21 home run mark and gave the Dodgers the edge to defeat the Mets in the first game.

Pitching Analysis

Los Angeles will give Brandon McCarthy the start against the Mets. In 11 starts this season, McCarthy has a 5-3 record and a 3.14 ERA. After a 5-1 start to the season, McCarthy has lost two of his last three starts, but only allowed five combined runs in those starts. As previously mentioned, the inconsistent hitting cost the pitcher two wins after solid performances.

Dodgers Trends

  • LA Dodgers is 6-2 ATS in its last 8 games
  • LA Dodgers is 10-1 SU in its last 11 games
  • The total has gone OVER in 9 of LA Dodgers's last 10 games

Game Pick

The Mets have been a disappointment this season because the team is more talented than the record indicates. However, the Dodgers are playing some really good baseball right now and trying to take back the division lead so I expect McCarthy to dominate the Mets bats and get enough run support to get the Dodgers the win.
