  • Over/Under: 8.5

New York Mets Analysis

The Mets had an opportunity to reduce the distance between them and the division leading Nationals, but lost their first two games of the series.

Instead of a single digit deficit, the Mets are now 11.5 games behind the Nationals and three games behind the Atlanta Braves, who sit in second place in the NL East.

The Mets kept things close in the first game of the series, losing 3-2.

However, the Nationals routed them on Tuesday, winning 11-4.

In Tuesday’s game, the Mets looked sharp early and jumped to a 2-0 lead, but Daniel Murphy and Bryce Harper combined to drive in seven runs and lead Washington to victory.

The Mets have allowed 14 runs in this series and six or more runs in four of their last eight games.

The Mets will have a good opportunity to bounce back on Wednesday when they face Tanner Roark, who has been giving up a lot of runs in his recent starts.

Jay Bruce leads the Mets with 79 hits and 57 RBI while Michael Conforto and Curtis Granderson have combined for 123 hits and 77 RBI.

Nevertheless, New York’s batters have to do a better job of driving runners home instead of leaving them stranded on base.

Pitcher Analysis

The Mets will send Jacob deGrom to the mound to take on the Nationals.

deGrom is 8-3 with a 3.55 ERA in 16 starts, and has been one of the few bright spots for the Mets this season.

In his last four starts, deGrom has pitched at least seven innings and has allowed only three runs, and the Mets will be hoping for another dominant performance from their ace.

Mets Trends

  • NY Mets is 1-4 ATS in its last 5 games
  • NY Mets is 6-2 ATS in its last 8 games on the road
  • NY Mets is 2-5 ATS in its last 7 games when playing Washington

Washington Nationals Analysis

The Nationals have won three consecutive games and will be going for their fourth on Wednesday as they try to fight their way back to the top of the National League standings.

With the All-Star break only a few days away, Washington will be trying to head into the break on a positive note, starting with a sweep of their division rivals.

Players like Bryce Harper and Daniel Murphy have been leading the way for the Nationals, while their pitching staff has also played very well in their last four outings.

Murphy leads with 105 hits and 60 RBI while Bryce Harper and Ryan Zimmerman have combined for 187 hits and 126 RBI.

But, they will face a tough test against deGrom, who has been pitching lights out lately.

Pitching Analysis

The Nationals will give Tanner Roark the start against New York on Wednesday.

In 17 starts, Roark has a 6-6 record with a 5.27 ERA. After a great start to the season, Roark has been very inconsistent lately and has also been hit hard by opponents.

Roark has lost four of his last five decisions and has allowed 24 runs in that span, which has to be a concern for the Nationals.

The Nationals are 7-3 in Roark’s last 10 starts vs. Mets, the Mets are 6-1 in deGrom’s last 7 starts vs. Nationals and the over is 6-2-1 in the last 9 meetings.

The fact that their bullpen has also been unreliable this season doesn’t bode well for Washington in this game.

Nationals Trends

  • Washington is 2-4 ATS in its last 6 games
  • Washington is 5-10 ATS in its last 15 games at home
  • Washington is 4-1 SU in its last 5 games at home

Pick and Prediction

The Mets haven’t played well lately, but they should be able to get to Roark and score some runs. New York is the smart play here.
