Texas Rangers Analysis

The Rangers will be playing their third consecutive series on the road, and were swept in their last series against the Oakland A’s, so they are coming into this game on a three-game losing streak, and are losers of three of their last five games.

The Rangers’ pitching staff has given up an average of six runs in their last three games, while they have been scoring an average of 2.3 runs per game.

For the season, Texas is 4-8 against Houston, but they are catching the Astros at the right time because the AL West leaders haven’t been playing as well as they did in the first half of the season.

With only a few weeks left before the playoffs, the division lead is out of their reach, but they can still win one of the two Wildcard spots since they are only three games behind the Minnesota Twins, who currently hold the final Wildcard spot.

To make a charge back up the Wildcard standings, the Rangers need to be more consistent and avoid losing another series to teams like the A’s.

Oakland has one of the worst records in baseball, but Texas really struggled in the loss and finished the game with only eight hits.

Shin-Soo Choo went 1 for 4 with a solo home run while Elvis Andrus matched that mark with an RBI of his own.

Adrian Beltre went 2 for 4 with a pair of doubles while Carlos Gomez, Nomar Mazara, Robinson Chirinos and Drew Robinson all added base hits of their own in the loss.

Since the Astros won’t be playing in front of their home crowd, this is a good opportunity for Texas to gain on the other Wildcard teams.

Starting Pitcher Analysis

The Rangers will give Martin Perez the start against Houston. In 25 starts, Perez is 9-10 with a 5.00 ERA. Perez has played well on the road lately and has allowed only one run in his last two road starts.

Rangers Betting Trends

  • Texas is 2-4 ATS in its last 6 games
  • Texas is 2-4 SU in its last 6 games

Houston Astros Analysis

The Astros have seen their once astronomical lead in the AL West reduced to 13 games, but are still in the drivers’ seat when it comes to their playoff destiny.

Houston has alternated between wins and losses in their last six games, and have won three of their last seven games.

With the Hurricane preventing them from playing in front of their home crowd, this is essentially a road game for the Astros, but they need to find a way to win this series if they don’t want to see their once insurmountable division lead shrink to single digits.

The six-game home series change means that the Astros will end up playing 19 consecutive games away from Minute Maid Park, as they completed a three-game trip Sunday and begin a 10-game trek after taking on the Mets.

There is a bright spot to this situation, which is that the Astros have played well away from Houston this year, posting a 42-22 record after a 7-5 victory at the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday.

Houston’s pitching was one of the big reasons for their success this season, but with injuries and fatigue setting in, the Astros haven’t played as well in the second half, but they are still considered one of the favorites to make it to the World Series.

Starting Pitcher Analysis

The Astros will send Mike Fiers to the mound to take on the Rangers. In 25 starts, Fiers is 8-8 with a 4.17 ERA.

After a stretch in which he allowed 16 runs in three games, Fiers has only allowed three runs in his last two starts.

Astros Betting Trends

  • Houston is 7-18 ATS in its last 25 games
  • The total has gone UNDER in 7 of Houston's last 10 games
  • The total has gone UNDER in 6 of Houston's last 7 games at home

Pick and Prediction

The Rangers are going to be desperate to get the win, but the Astros will be playing with a lot of emotion and will win over the Rangers who slighted them by not switching home series with them due to the Hurricane.
