2017 World Series Game 6 Prediction: Astros Champions or Game 7 For Dodgers?

The Houston Astros have a chance to close out the World Series on Tuesday, and win the first World Series trophy in franchise history with a win over the Los Angeles Dodgers in game six of what has been the most exciting World Series in quite some time. The Dodgers will be trying to stave off elimination and force a deciding game seven with a win in the friendly confines of Dodger Stadium.

Houston Astros Starting Pitcher

Justin Verlander (19-8 ERA: 3.19) will get the start for the Astros in game 6, and will be trying to close things out for the Astros and win the series for the first time in his career, after coming close as a member of the Detroit Tigers.

Verlander has been great in the postseason for the Astros, and has four wins in his five postseason starts.

The only start he didn’t get the win was the second game of this World Series, in which he allowed three runs in six innings.

The Astros still got the win in that game, and they are hoping he can help them close the series out on Tuesday, so they don’t have to go through another game 7.

Verlander is the poster boy for this postseason with a 4-0 record, a 2.05 earned-run average, a 0.88 WHIP and 29 strikeouts in 30.2 innings.

Houston Astros Analysis

The Astros are coming off a win in what can only be described as the most exciting World Series game ever, winning a back and forth game 13-12 in 10 innings.

The game, which was started by Clayton Kershaw and Dallas Keuchel, was supposed to be a low scoring affair similar to their starts in game 1, but both bats came alive in this game, and neither ace made it to the fifth inning.

The Astros' sluggers brought home the bacon as Yuli Gurriel, Jose Altuve, George Springer, Carlos Correa and Brian McCann all hit home runs while Alex Bregman won the game with a two-out single in the bottom of the 10th.

While Jose Altuve and Carlos Correa have received a lot of attention during Houston’s run, George Springer continues to be the team’s most valuable player during the World Series, and had another big game for the Astros, hitting his third homerun of the series, and bringing his RBI total to 4.

Springer reflects the Astros’ hopes heading into this game as shown by his comments to Anthony Castrovince of MLB.com, mentioning that, “It's not an easy place to play," about the Dodgers' home venue, "but we're giving the ball to Justin Verlander, and that's going to be awesome for us.”

Now, if Verlander can limit the Dodgers to one or two runs, the team will be hoping their big bats come through for them.

Los Angeles Dodgers Starting Pitcher

The Dodgers will send Rich Hill (12-8) ERA: 3.27) to the mound to take on the Astros, and will need Hill at his best if they want to force a game 7.

Unlike Verlander, who has started five games, the Dodgers have only needed Hill for three games this postseason, and he has come through with great performances, but hasn’t gotten a decision.

Hill has allowed 4 runs in his three starts, but hasn’t gone past the fifth inning, which might be the difference maker in this one, after the Dodgers used up their bullpen on Sunday night.

Despite his short outings, Hill has a 2.77 ERA in three games, and has walked seven batters.

Los Angeles Dodgers Analysis

This is a must win for the Dodgers because the series is over if they can’t defeat the Astros, which means manager Dave Roberts will use every trick he knows to try and get his team to force a deciding game 7.

With Verlander on the mound, the Dodgers will need to get to him early and force the Astros to go to their bullpen to give themselves a good chance to win this one.

But, with Verlander having a knack for pitching well in big games, will they be able to get to him? At least, Yasiel Puig seems to think so. “This is not going to be finished Tuesday," said Puig after Game 5. "There's going to be a Game 7. ... Everybody is going to be ready for Verlander [on] Tuesday night. The best pitcher they have."

The Dodgers know they can get to Verlander, as they did in Game 2 with a couple of homers from Joc Pederson and Corey Seager which put the Dodgers up 3-1.

But, that lead was blown by Kenley Jansen who was unable to save the game and turned the 3-1 lead into a 7-6 Astros win.

What this means is that this game will likely come down to its pitching and decisions about pitchers. And, for the Dodgers, this means manager Dave Roberts has the weight of the world on his shoulders.

One mistake, one pitch, or one pitching change can be the difference between another game or the Astros crowning themselves as the 2017 World Series champions.
