Betting on the Warriors

Once more, the Warriors got the job done. Game 1 is under their belts. One more for the win column.

The Warriors started slowly in Game 1 but bounced back to a draw by halftime. It’s all they needed to ultimately run away in the two last quarters.

With the win, the Dubs are beginning to lock on stronger to a fourth straight run to the NBA Finals.

ESPN’s Jalen Rose broke down the film from Game 1:

Tonight’s game won’t come easier though. Houston will be making adjustments. And, they’ll come out gunning.

Houston is desperate for a win. Especially because it would be a home win. So Golden State will have to match Houston’s intensity for starters.

They’ll also have to figure out how they can get better defensively. And show James Harden and Chris Paul that their game plan is rock-solid.

Defense is the name of the game if the Warriors hope to once more outscore the Rockets tonight.

Golden State shot back at Harden with 37 points from Kevin Durant and 28 from Klay Thompson, while Stephen Curry added 18.

Curry only took 15 shots from the field so it’s likely he’ll be unleashed tonight with devastating results for the Rockets. Hopefully, he’ll stay healthy after the game which is always a worry given Curry’s propensity for injury.

Betting on the Rockets

The reaction was clear after the Rockets lost Game 1. People siding with the idea of Houston going down, yet again, in flames just got way bigger.

Even the likes of Charles Barkley, who’s seen more than his fair share of Warriors vs Rockets series thinks this series is over based on what he saw in the first game.

I picked the Warriors in five (games),” Barkley said postgame. “I’m taking the Warriors in three.” “This is over, Ernie,” continued Barkley. “You just (saw) this game. The Rockets can’t beat them. “Anybody who thinks the Rockets are gonna win a game or win the series is an idiot.

Stephen Smith may think the same:

The loss aggravated the Rockets’ bloody thorn in their flesh. Even if it might have been just one game, it’s still a game they should have won. It was on their court nonetheless.

But maybe the loss lighted a fire in their bellies. One hot enough they’ll come out blazing tonight to win. Only a win would make it acceptable.

What will the Rockets change for tonight’s game that can make a difference? How can they silence the naysayers?

Not all is gray in Houston. Game 1 was only the second home loss this postseason and they still haven’t lost consecutive games at Toyota Center since the end of last year.

The Rockets just need to get back in the saddle. Forget about Game 1. What’s past is past. They can still get back into the competition and win it.

Oddsmakers may not think they can win the series, but they do believe they can, at least, win this game. Sometimes one win is all it takes as a stepping stone to greater accomplishments.

James Harden, of course, will take a major role tonight to prevent Houston from falling into the 0-2 hole.

Harden played well in Game 1, put up 41 points in 35 minutes of play. However, he was mostly isolated throughout the game which affected how the Rockets moved the ball around.

Chris Paul also must continue pushing his expectations. He’s key to this team if they’re to win.  Paul played well in the first game, scoring 23 points on 47 percent shooting, but he must be even better.

Perhaps the greatest improvement, however, needs to come from the rest of the team. As a team, the Rockets combined for a measly 42 points on 39 percent shooting.

Harden and Paul cannot take on the full Warriors onslaught. It’s going to take a team to defeat them playing how they are.

The question is, who will rise to the challenge?

Some Rockets vs. Warriors Betting Trends

  • Golden State is 5-1 ATS in its last 6 games when playing on the road against Houston
  • Golden State is 6-1 SU in its last 7 games
  • The total has gone UNDER in 5 of Golden State's last 6 games on the road
  • Houston is 19-6 SU in its last 25 games
  • Houston is 3-6 ATS in its last 9 games at home
  • Houston is 1-5 SU in its last 6 games when playing at home against Golden State

Game Predictions: As expected, Houston will come out gunning and try to put a big lead by halftime. The big difference though between this game and the first is in this one the rest of the team will be pulling their own weight and not leaving everything to Harden and Paul.

If they fail to do this, if they cannot all rise to the challenge, then it’s game over and perhaps series over for Houston.

Pick: I’m going with Golden State at +2
