First Four 2017 March Madness Picks - Wildcats vs Demon Deacons
It’s been quite a wait, but it’s finally here and it’s going to be all it’s always hyped up to be. So, just to get a taste of what’s to come, I have a preview of one of the first four 2017 March Madness games. Let’s get it on!
First Four 2017 March Madness Picks
- What: Kansas State Wildcats vs Wake Forest Demon Deacons
- When: Friday, March 17, 2017 – 9:00 PM ET
- Where: Golden 1 Center – Sacramento, CA
- Spread: Wake Forest -1
- Over/Under: 152
Betting on the Wildcats
The Wildcats didn’t win the Big 12 Tournament, losing to West Virginia in the semifinals, but they enter this competition with high-hopes and a string of wins (including one over Baylor) that’s not to be sneered at.
The loss to West Virginia was tough, equally as tough as the Mountaineers’ defense, one of the best in the nation, so expect the Wildcats to go tit-for-tat against the Demon Deacons. Wake Forest’s defense isn’t quite as strong as that of WV’s, one that allows 77 points per game, if anything the game against the Mountaineers should have been a good testing ground. The Wildcats have plenty of players who could stack on the points, including Wesley Iwundu who is averaging 12.5 points per game.
Betting on the Demon Deacons
Let’s get one thing straight, Wake Forest is no pushover. Players such as John Collins can strike you down as an opponent and if you’re not ready for him with a plan in place, he will make you pay. Even against a team like Louisville, Collins racked up 25 points along with 11 boards, in the 88-81 win.
Collins is accustomed to pulling double-doubles, averaging 18.9 points and 9.8 rebounds per game and he’s not the only player who can step things up. The pair of Bryant Crawford and Keyshawn Woods also put up 16 and 12 points per game respectively and when they combine their efforts it can be practically impossible to stop them from beating you to a pulp with a barrage of points. Crawford and Collins even stuck Duke with 52 points on Feb 18, albeit losing the game 99-94.
Game Prediction: Although I don’t think the Demon Deacons will blow out Kansas State, they will win. The Wildcats have some impressive wins, but they haven’t faced a quality ACC team. The Demon Deacons are going to need to be smarter and tighten up their defense. Collins needs to take control early on and push the ball outside to exploit the the Wildcats’ deficiencies at defending the three. If Wake Forest can move the ball inside to Collins, and he can find an opening to shoot a three then it can quickly turn into a shootout where the Wildcats will lose. What is the best bet? I’m looking at the over as Wake Forest has crossed the closing total in 15 of their past 17 games.
