How To Bet The 2017 Allstate Sugar Bowl

The 4th ranked Alabama Crimson Tide were able to sneak into the playoffs despite not playing in their conference championship game, and will be rewarded with a semifinal matchup against the #1 ranked Clemson Tigers in the Allstate Sugar Bowl.

While some fans (Ohio State) are upset the Tide got in over their team, the rest of the college football world is excited to watch these two teams square off for the third consecutive year, after two classic national championship games between them.

If You’re Betting On The Alabama Crimson Tide

Even though they didn’t play in the SEC Championship game, the Crimson Tide finished the season 12-1, with their only loss coming at the hands of the Auburn Tigers in the Iron Bowl.

And while they didn’t have the strongest schedule, they were clearly one of the best teams in the country this year.

After hearing about his team not deserving to be in the playoffs for the past month, Nick Saban will have the Crimson Tide ready to go when they play the Tigers.

Alabama brings back several key players from the offense last season, but replacing OJ Howard will be difficult.

The tight end accounted for 314 yards and 3 TDs vs Clemson in the past two national championship games. The only Tide player to catch more than 15 passes this season has been Calvin Ridley but finding a second consistent threat might be critical to winning this game.

Jalen Hurts deserves some fringe Heisman chatter because the sophomore has become an incredibly efficient passer as well as one of Bama’s best rushing threats.

Nick Saban has once again turned his defense into arguably the best in the country. No team has allowed fewer yards or points this season than Bama – plus the team has racked up 31 sacks and 20 turnovers.

Clemson is more likely to dink and dunk their way up the field offensively, so it is going to be important that the Alabama linebacker unit is ready to close out quickly.

The Crimson Tide, who had the 9th best rushing attack in the country this year, will focus on running the ball against the Tigers. If they are able to run successfully, look for the Crimson Tide to call a lot of play action passes to try and keep the defense guessing all night.

Jalen Hurts, who threw for 1,940 yards and 15 touchdowns this season, will face a lot of pressure on throwing downs and will need to do a good job protecting the ball. Even though he threw only one interception this season, Hurts will need to be careful against an opportunistic Clemson defense.

If they can run the ball well and don’t turn the ball over, the Crimson Tide should be able to win this game.

If You’re Betting On The Clemson Tigers

The Tigers and their fans are going into this game with a lot of confidence after defeating the Crimson Tide in the national championship game last year.

Clemson might not have the best offense in the nation this season with the program losing the likes of Deshaun Watson, Wayne Gallman and Mike Williams to the NFL after the championship last season but they can still score regardless.

Junior quarterback Kelly Bryant has filled in admirably despite not being as lethal a passer. In addition, the running back tandem of Travis Etienne and Tavien Feaster has combined for 1,403 rushing yards and 20 touchdowns.

Even without Watson, the Tigers still have a chance to win this game because they are a well-coached team, which means Dabo Swinney will have them well prepared for this game.

Like the Tide, the Tigers will likely focus on their running game, which was very good this season, with the team averaging 204.1 yards per game, which was 32nd.

If the Tigers can’t get going on the ground, quarterback Kelly Bryant is more than capable of making plays through the air and with his feet, after rushing for 646 yards and 11 touchdowns this season.

Clemson’s defense is as good as ever with the Tigers sitting in the top 10 in the nation in yards allowed, passing defense and points allowed. Clemson has one of the best defensive lines in the country with both Clelin Ferrell and Austin Bryant – likely first-round picks in the upcoming NFL draft – having racked up at least 7.5 sacks and 14.5 tackles for a loss.

Defensively, the Tigers and Crimson Tide were the best two teams in the country in terms of points allowed, so don’t expect the 2017 Sugar Bowl to be a high-scoring affair.
