Temple Owls Analysis

After an embarrassing season opening loss to the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame, the Owls have won two consecutive games.

The team is hoping it can carry the momentum into what will be their biggest game of the year.

Last year, en route to a 10-4 season, the Owls defeated the Bulls 46-30, so the players will be going into this game with some confidence.

Temple’s strength this year has been their passing game, and they average 262.3 yards per game, which is the 48th best mark in the league this year.

While they have been able to move the ball with relative ease, they haven’t been able to score a lot of points and are averaging 20.3 points per game, which is 112th in the country.

Temple’s defense also need to play better if they are to have the same type of success they had last season. The defense currently allows 27.7 points per game, which is 83rd in the nation.

They also have to find a way to rattle South Florida quarterback Quinton Flowers who is arguably USF’s biggest threat.

The Owls need to figure out a way to get off the field fast and not allow opponents to convert on third down opportunities.

Opponents are converting 45.2 percent of their third-down conversion attempts against Temple.

Even though the Owls won their last two games, they struggled against opponents they should have beaten easily, which raises some concern going in to this game against one of the best offenses in the country.

Temple is also adjusting to new leadership under head coach Geoff Collins; with so many greenhorns in the team, this game might prove to be too much of a stretch.

Temple Betting Trends

  • Temple is 12-4 ATS in its last 16 games
  • Temple is 1-4 ATS in its last 5 games
  • Temple is 9-2 SU in its last 11 games

South Florida Analysis

South Florida picked off where they left off last season, and continue to be one of the best offenses in the country.

They have scored at least 31 points in all their games this season, and defeated all three opponents handily.

The Bulls, under first year head coach Charlie Strong, are hoping to improve on last season’s 11-2 effort and try to crash the College Football Playoffs, which means they will likely have to run the table and hope some of the top teams lose a couple of games before the season ends.

The fact that one of the team’s losses last year was a 46-30 loss to Temple, will give the players some added motivation going into this game.

Despite a lot of penalties and mistakes against Illinois last week, the Bulls were still able to win by 24 points.

This week, Strong will expect a cleaner game from his players to avoid falling behind quickly and having to rally for the win.

USF’s passing game isn’t as good as Temple’s, but the Bulls are averaging 241 yards per game, which is 60th in the country.

Dual-threat quarterback Quinton Flowers should have also cleared out any cobwebs and I expect him to be up to snuff.

Last week against Illinois, Flowers passed for 280 yards and four touchdowns while rushing for 106 yards and another touchdown which means he can get Temple’s defense in hot water.

However, the Bulls’ strength has been their running game, which has dominated their opponents this season.

USF is averaging 281.3 rushing yards per game, which is the 13th best in the country.

Their rushing game has also allowed them to control the clock in all their games, so look for them to dominate the time of possession again this week.

USF has averaged 40 points per game this season, while their defense is holding opponents to 20.7 points per game.

South Florida didn’t play well in their first two games, however they seem to have gotten back on track against Illinois which bodes well heading into conference play.

Flowers will need to stay consistent in order for things to work, and they’ll also need the contribution of running back Darius Trice to move the chains and eat up the clock.

Temple gave up 422 rushing yards to Notre Dame in Week 1, including 106 to Brandon Wimbush and 161 to Josh Adams.

The ground attack should also work against the Owls.

USF Betting Trends

  • South Florida is 2-4 ATS in its last 6 games
  • South Florida is 5-0 SU in its last 5 games
  • The total has gone OVER in 12 of South Florida's last 17 games

Pick and Prediction

  • ATS Pick: Take USF against the spread at -19
  • Straight Up Pick: USF
  • Over/Under Pick: This won’t be a high scoring game, take the UNDER.

Temple isn’t as good as they were last year, and USF has an axe to grind from last year so expect the Bulls to dominate this one and get an easy win.
