College Football Predictions For Week 1

Iowa Hawkeyes vs Iowa State Cyclones

  • When: September 09, 2017, 12:00 PM ET
  • Where: Jack Trice Stadium
  • Spread: Hawkeyes -2.5
  • Over/Under: 48

The Cy-Hawk trophy will be up for grabs in this rivalry game.

Iowa has dominated in recent years, winning the last two contests, but the Cyclones are hoping to end that trend this week.

Both teams are coming off wins on opening weekend, and would love to start the season 2-0.

Iowa State was able to hold off Northern Iowa last week 42-24, but they will have to play a mistake free game against their rivals who dominated the Wyoming Cowboys in a 24-3 win.

The Hawkeyes have had a pretty good run while on the road, winning four of their last five road games.

Nate Stanley is right on the mark hitting 53.3 percent of his passes for 124 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. Stanley has three touchdown passes on 24 career pass attempts.

Nick Easley and Noah Fant lead the way in the air game tallying 106 receiving yards and three touchdowns while Matt VandeBerg has two receptions. The Iowa Hawkeyes ground game averages 138 yards per contest, with Akrum Wadley leading with 116 yards on 24 carries.

On defense, Iowa is allowing three points and 233 yards per game. Josey Jewell leads with 14 tackles, while A.J. Epenesa has one sack and Joshua Jackson has one interception.

The Cyclones meanwhile have lost five of their last eight home games. Jacob Park is completing 77.1 percent of his passes for 271 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.

Allen Lazard and Hakeem Butler have combined for 183 receiving yards and one touchdown while Trever Ryen has six catches.

The Iowa State Cyclones ground game averages 134 yards per game, with David Montgomery leading the way with 82 yards and two touchdowns.

On defense, Iowa State is allowing 24 points and 378 yards per game. Brian Peavy leads with 10 tackles, while Willie Harvey has one sack and Kamari Cotton-Moya one interception.

Betting Trends

  • Iowa is 4-1 ATS in its last 5 games
  • Iowa is 4-1 SU in its last 5 games
  • The total has gone UNDER in 4 of Iowa's last 5 games
  • Iowa State is 8-3 ATS in its last 11 games
  • Iowa State is 4-13 SU in its last 17 games
  • The total has gone OVER in 4 of Iowa State's last 6 games

Pick and Prediction

The Cyclones will be ready to defend their turf. I expect Iowa to win a very close game, so take the Cyclones, who will be the underdogs in this one, on the plus.

Oregon Ducks vs Nebraska Cornhuskers

  • When: September 09, 2017, 4:30 PM ET
  • Where: Autzen Stadium
  • Spread: Oregon Ducks -14
  • Over/Under: 73

This is one of the marquee games this weekend, featuring two powerhouse programs fighting their way back to national relevance.

The Ducks showed they are still one of the best offensive teams in the country when firing on all cylinders, putting up 77 points on Southern Utah in a blowout victory to start the season.

They are hoping the offense continues playing at a high level when they face the Cornhuskers on Saturday.

This is a good matchup for the Ducks. UO’s offense is versatile and could pose problems across the field with running backs Royce Freeman, Kani Benoit and Tony Brooks-James who combined to score eight touchdowns in their game against SU.

Nebraska also won its first game of the season, but struggled putting Arkansas State away in what was expected to be an easy game for them.

Nebraska won the game 43-36, but not too many people left the game impressed with their performance.

The Cornhuskers struggled on defense and stops were hard to come by throughout the game: Arkansas State racked up 497 yards and 32 first downs using a bubble screen repeatedly to gut Nebraska's coverage for yards on the perimeter.

While Nebraska’s offense was good, with quarterback Tanner Lee, the transfer from Tulane completing 19-of-32 passes for 238 yards and two touchdowns without an interception, the Huskers’ defensive weaknesses were evident.

Arkansas State cut through Diaco’s defense with short passes and relied little on the run. If they don’t play better than that on both sides of the ball, I expect them to be embarrassed by the Ducks.

Betting Trends

  • Nebraska is 2-4 ATS in its last 6 games
  • Nebraska is 11-4 SU in its last 15 games
  • The total has gone OVER in 4 of Nebraska's last 6 games
  • Oregon is 3-11-1 ATS in its last 15 games
  • Oregon is 3-8 SU in its last 11 games
  • The total has gone OVER in 12 of Oregon's last 17 games

Pick and Prediction

The Ducks are going to be playing their first big game of the season in front of their fans so I expect them to win pretty convincingly. Though the line opened favoring the Ducks by 4, it’s now moved to 14 which should give you some indication of how oddsmakers are expecting this game to go.

TCU Horned Frogs vs Arkansas Razorbacks

  • When: September 09, 2017, 3:30 PM ET
  • Where: Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium
  • Spread: TCU Horned Frogs -4
  • Over/Under: 58.5

After breezing through FCS opponents last week, the Horned Frogs and Razorbacks finally face some real competition this week.

TCU’s biggest problem last season was their defense, which allowed a lot of points and kept forcing the offense to bail them out.

If the Horned Frogs want to have a chance of making the playoffs this season, their defense has to avoid giving opponents big plays and also force some turnovers.

TCU is looking to keep the ball rolling from their 63-0 season-opening drubbing over Jackson State. But, this will require a win at an SEC stadium.

The Horned Frogs have not gone on the road for an SEC game since 1997, when they lost at Vanderbilt 40-16. Their last win in SEC country was at Vandy, 16-3, in 1995.

The Razorbacks are a very unpredictable bunch because they have a lot of talent but are very inconsistent.

Arkansas beat the Florida A&M Rattlers 49-7 on Saturday. The Razorbacks scored the first 42 points of the game with Austin Allen leading the way with 135 passing yards, a touchdown, and an interception.

Chase Hayden led the ground attack with 120 rushing yards and a touchdown on 14 carries. Meanwhile, Devwah Whaley wound up with 60 rushing yards and a touchdown, and David Williams added two rushing touchdowns

With the game being played on their home field, I expect them to rise to the occasion and give us a very entertaining game.

Betting Trends

  • Texas Christian is 4-10 ATS in its last 14 games
  • Texas Christian is 4-2 ATS in its last 6 games on the road
  • Texas Christian is 4-1 SU in its last 5 games on the road
  • Arkansas is 1-4 ATS in its last 5 games
  • Arkansas is 14-7 SU in its last 21 games
  • The total has gone UNDER in 4 of Arkansas's last 6 games

Pick and Prediction

The Razorbacks have the edge in this one and I expect them to win a very close game.
