Betting on the Lions

The Lions’ four losses haven’t been by a big margin of points, in fact, three of those games were only lost by one touchdown which their 3-4 record doesn’t reveal.

Detroit still has a shot of making it to the playoffs, but they have to start winning games, making this match more important because they cannot afford any more losses.

However, Detroit faces some offensive problems mainly due to injuries to offensive line players and their backs which have killed their running game.

Ameer Abdullah might get the ball more in this game as the Packers’ defense against the run isn’t particularly good which means the Lions could finally start producing scores via the run.

Their passing game is solid though and Matthew Stafford is as competent a quarterback as any in the league right now as he showed in their game against the Steelers. If his receiving corps step up, they can use the passing attack as their main offensive weapon with Marvin Jones leading the way.

On the defensive side, though it’s not on par with other defenses it can get the job done. Considering the Packers, without Rodgers, don’t really pose a big threat via the pass, the defensive unit should be able to contend with Green Bay’s offense.

The D should also be able to get to Packers’ quarterback Brett Hundley and exploit a weak Green Bay offensive line. Defensive end Ezekiel Ansah can punch through and get some sacks.

Betting on the Packers

It’s no secret that as soon as Aaron Rodgers’ injury was announced, the Packers chances of making the playoffs, perhaps even the Super Bowl, came tumbling down.

There are still six more games the Packers have to go through before Rodgers comes back on the field and that means the Packers will have to dig deep and do what they can to win games.

This makes this game crucial for the Packers and they need backup quarterback Brett Hundley to take a big step forward and jump in head first.

Hundley hasn’t exactly impressed, but it’s an understandable situation when you’re living under Rodgers’ shadow. At least, for Hundley, the Packers’ running game takes some pressure off his back.

Running back Aaron Jones has stepped up as a surprise for the Packers this season. Hundley is averaging 5.6 yards per carry and has eased the problems that came about by the absence of Ty Montgomery.

If the Packers can figure out a way to contend with the Lions defensive ends, it’ll give Jones a chance to run the ball and do some heavy damage on the outside where the Lions have shown some weakness.

The Packers will also have to give Hundley as much protection as they can; in the Lions’ loss to New Orleans last week, the Saints didn’t blitz Hundley too much, but the Lions will undoubtedly be harrying him all night long to force him into making costly mistakes.

Lions vs Packers Betting Trends

  • Detroit is 1-4 ATS in its last 5 games
  • Detroit is 1-4 SU in its last 5 games
  • The total has gone UNDER in 12 of Detroit's last 18 games
  • Green Bay is 2-4 ATS in its last 6 games
  • Green Bay is 12-4 SU in its last 16 games
  • The total has gone OVER in 11 of Green Bay's last 14 games

Prediction: Lambeau Field has always proved to be a strong advantage for the Packers. However, without Aaron Rodgers the Packers are a hobbled team. Hundley will do his best, but his inexperience will show and the Lions will make it a long night for him.

Pick: Lions -2.
