2018 Preseason NFL Odds: Panthers vs. Bills

You are here

While the real action doesn’t kick off until a few weeks from now, there are still plenty of preseason NFL odds to fill your craving needs. Week 1 has some interesting games lined up starting with the Panthers vs. Bills, so what do you say we jump right into things?

Preseason NFL Odds: Carolina Panthers vs. Buffalo Bills

  • When: August 09, 2018, 7:00 PM ET
  • Where: New Era Field, Orchard Park, New York
  • NFL Odds: Buffalo -2.5 / Total: 34

Betting on the Carolina Panthers?

The Panthers are in one of the toughest divisions having to compete with the likes of the New Orleans Saints and Atlanta Falcons. Last year, Carolina went 11-5 and made it to the playoffs though lost to the Saints in the wild-card game.

Carolina will be looking to hit the ground running this year and get an early jump on their competition. Though it’s unlikely they’ll come out in their first preseason game full guns blasting, they’ll probably start to get their players into a flow.

Quarterback Cam Newton will attempt to build upon last season’s campaign in which he accumulated 3,302 passing yards. With a renewed receiving corps that added Torrey Smith and Pro Bowler Greg Olson at tight end, the Panthers are well poised to have a successful season.

In the ground game, the Panthers are relying on second-year running back Christian McCaffery who gained 435 rushing yards and 651 receiving yards last season. Newton rushed to a career-high 754 yards last season.

Betting on the Buffalo Bills?

The Bills finally brought an end to a 17-year playoff drought last season; they wound up with a 9-7 record after losing to Jacksonville in the Wild Card game.

In the offseason, Buffalo traded Tyrod Taylor to the Browns and picked up Josh Allen with the seventh overall pick to head the Bills’ offense. Though the greenhorn Allen will likely be eased into the quarterback job, the Bills won’t be without talent at that position with Nathan Peterman or A.J. McCarron taking the reins to lead the offense.

Former Alabama offensive coordinator Brian Daboll has taken on the same job with the Bills and he’s expected to rely heavily on All-Pro running back LeSean McCoy to pound out the Bills’ ground game. The Bills have ranked first in rushing twice in the three years since McCoy’s time with the Bills; McCoy rushed for 1,138 yards last season but there are questions if he will get a suspension for a possible assault on an ex-girlfriend that the NFL is investigating.

Game Prediction: Would this have been a regular season game, I would most likely go with the Panthers to gain the win. But, we don’t usually get to see much from teams in the preseason and the Bills seem to have a bit of an edge in the quarterback position. Carolina’s backup quarterback situation is shaky at best and there’s really no one at this time that I foresee stepping up for the job.

Pick: Buffalo -2.5
