AFC West Predictions 2017

Last season, the AFC West was the toughest division in the NFL with two 12 win teams and another that finished with nine wins.

This year, the division should be even tougher with the Denver Broncos and Los Angeles Chargers expected to improve as the betting odds clearly reflect.

Denver Broncos

The Broncos are projected to win 8.5 games. They were expected to suffer a drop last season after Peyton Manning’s retirement and having won the Super Bowl in 2015, but they still managed to win nine games.

The biggest issue Denver had last year was the quarterback position because none of their quarterbacks had any NFL experience.

Even though Trevor Siemian started for Denver last season, the Broncos have a new head coach and he hasn’t decided who will be the opening day starter. Vance Joseph he said he will determine the team’s starter during the preseason.

For now, no one can tell whether it’ll be Siemian or Paxton Lynch. If Siemian gets the job, he’ll have to adapt to coach Joseph’s new stratagem. If Lynch starts it’ll probably be an entirely different feel to this offense.

In any case, there are still questions on how effective the offensive line will be this year. Garett Bolles and Ronald Leary have their work cut out for them.

This team continues to be driven by a hard-nosed defense, led by defensive player of the year Von Miller, and the likes of Chris Harris, Aqib Talib, Bradley Roby, T.J. Ward and Darian Stewart.

The Broncos have a tough schedule starting with three home games before their break in Week 5, followed by road games against the Chargers, Chiefs, and Eagles.

With the defense expected to be dominant once again, if the Broncos quarterbacks show progress this year, the Broncos will not only win more than 8.5 games, they will also make the playoffs.

  • Over/Under Prediction: OVER 9

Kansas City Chiefs

The Chiefs are projected to win nine games this season. Last season, they won the AFC West, which came as a surprise to a few people, but this year, things are likely going to be more difficult.

The Chiefs parted ways with running back Jamaal Charles and wide receiver Jeremy Maclin, leaving them with less experienced players at both positions.

Regardless, Tyreek Hill and tight end Travis Kelce still proved amazingly effective last year and perhaps could have an even better season this year.

The trio of Spencer Ware, Charcandrick West and Kareem Hunt also pose a strong option via the ground game.

On defense, the Chiefs aren’t exactly stellar but Justin Houston, Marcus Peters and Eric Berry can get the job done.

The Chiefs also have one of the toughest schedules in the NFL, and will play seven playoff teams from last season, including the Oakland Raiders, who they play twice.

With such a tough schedule, I don’t see the Chiefs making the playoffs this year. I will be even more surprised if they can win more than eight games this season.

  • Over/Under Prediction: UNDER 9

Los Angeles Chargers

The Chargers are projected to win 7.5 games this year. Last season, they finished at the bottom of the AFC West with five wins.

This year, things are looking up for the Chargers because running back Melvin Gordon showed he was capable of being the team’s feature back, and the team is also expected to have both Antonio Gates and Keenan Allen back, after missing most of last year with injuries.

Also, the offense is loaded with talent with the likes of Mike Williams, Tyrell Williams, Travis Benjamin, and Gates and Allen.

On defense, the Chargers have some outstanding players such as Joey Bosa and Jason Verrett. This defense has the potential of being among the top five in the league.

If the Chargers can manage winning their game against the Broncos in Week 1, you could be looking at an 4-0 start because they have three home games after the opener.

Later on in the season, the Chargers face a tough road schedule with games against the Raiders, Giants, and Patriots before their Week 0 bye after which they play the Jaguars, Bills, Browns, and Redskins.

The Chargers will be the biggest surprise in this division, and they will win more than eight games.

  • Over/Under Prediction: OVER 7.5

Oakland Raiders

The Raiders are projected to win 10 games this season. They considered the best team in the AFC West because they are a very young team and are coming off a 12-win season.

The biggest question surrounding the team is how healthy quarterback Derek Carr will be when the season starts after suffering a season ending injury in the second to last game of last season.

Amari Cooper and Khalil Mack will get better this season. And, Jared Cooper is a solid offensive line player that should provide ample protection for Carr and for the newly acquired Marshawn Lynch.

The Raiders have a tough schedule nevertheless, with three of four on the road to start followed by home games against the Ravens, Chargers, and Chiefs. Then it’s on to two road games before the bye and a home stretch against the Pats, Broncos and Giants. It’s certainly won’t be a cake walk, but I expect them to pull through.

With a healthy Carr in the lineup and the addition of Marshawn Lynch in the offseason, there is no reason why the Raiders won’t win more than 10 games. Expect the Raiders to not only win the division, but also make a deep playoff run.
