Betting on the Cowboys

One could hope we get to see Dak Prescott and Ezekiel Elliot play in this game. But, don’t hold your breath for it.

Elliot is battling some domestic violence allegations, but still no one knows what will happen. Even less how this could affect the Cowboys early on in the season if he does.

It’s more likely they’ll keep them nice and safe for when the real fun starts later on.

So, we’ll probably get to watch Kellen Moore, Zac Dysert, and Cooper Rush on the field at the quarterback position.

Third-round wide receiver Chad Williams will probably also get some time to season him a bit.

We’ll also get to watch Jahad Thomas, Keith Smith, and Rod Smith as running backs.

I’m interested in seeing what the Cowboys have done on defense. Particularly, if they’ve corrected the problems they had last year against the pass (260.4 passing yards allowed per game).

The problem I see here is that most of their secondary is green around the edges with rookies like Chidobe Awuzie and Xavier Woods.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones also mentioned that linebacker Jaylon Smith, the 2016 second-round pick who suffered a devastating knee injury, is “unlikely” to make his debut on Thursday night. First-round defensive end Taco Charlton, an Ohio native, will get some time on the field, as well.

Betting on the Cardinals

I don’t expect to see Carson Palmer or Larry Fitzgerald getting any play time either.

It’s just too dangerous a risk to take having them injured before this season even starts.

We’ll all get to watch Drew Stanton front and center. Not that I mind seeing him on the sidelines dancing:

Stanton won’t be the only quarterback on the field. Expect to see rookie Trevor Knight and veteran Blaine Gabbert passing the ball at some point.

The trio will be fighting to see who gets the spot as main backup, so at least we’ll have something to watch how it plays out.

I see Gabbert as the front-runner of the three, which means he’s going to have to go out there tonight and give it his all, that is, if he’s to stay with the Cardinals.

I don’t really think the team will risk Patrick Peterson either. Their star cornerback will probably watch on the sidelines as other candidates strut their stuff to earn their spot along his side.

It’ll be fun to watch how linebacker Haason Reddick and safety Budda Baker fare out in their first game in the pros. Though they might not see a ton of time on the field, they’ll get a taste of it.

Pick and Prediction: Though this game doesn’t really matter much to the teams, they do matter to players fighting for spots on the rosters.

I’m much more interested in how many people actually watch this game, 9.28 million viewers last year, which goes to show how starved we all are from football.

Anyway, I pick the Cowboys to win and cover.
