My NHL free picks this week start on Friday, Dec. 16. Who wins in what could be a 2017 Stanley Cup Preview between Los Angeles and defending champion Pittsburgh on Dec. 16? On Saturday, who wins in a great match up between the Montreal Canadians and the Washington Capitals? Then, on Sunday, another great match up awaits as Chicago hosts San Jose. Will the Sharks take it to the Blackhawks on the road?

Los Angeles at Pittsburgh
When: Friday, Dec. 16 at 7:00 pm ET
Where: PPG Paints Arena, Pittsburgh, PA
TV: NBCSN
Analysis: The Los Angeles Kings travels to Pittsburgh to battle the Pens on a nationally televised game this Friday, Dec. 16. At 14-11-0-2 to start the week, the Kings are in fifth place in the Pacific Standings. Los Angeles could do themselves a favor by beating the Pens this Friday.
That won’t be easy. Pittsburgh are the defending champs for a reason. Not only that, but they’re hot, having won 5 in a row to start the week. Unless L.A. turns their recent form around, 2-3 straight up in their last 5 as of Dec. 12, it’s hard to see them beating Pitt on the road.
I am picking the Pens in this NHL tilt versus the Kings.
NHL Free Pick: Pittsburgh
Montreal at Washington
When: Saturday, Dec. 17 at 7:00 pm ET
Where: Verizon Center, Washington, D.C.
TV: CSNB
Analysis: Montreal travels to D.C. to battle the Caps this Saturday. The Canadians have been stellar overall. As of Dec. 12, Montreal is a terrific 19-6-2-1 straight up. Unfortunately, the Canadians are only 5-5-1-1 on the road this season.
Washington, who with a 17-7-1-2 record to start the week is only in fifth place in the deep Metropolitan Division, are 11-4 at home this season. It’s hard to see how the Canadians, especially after battling Boston and San Jose at home this week, take it to the Caps in this match up.
I am picking Washington as the smart bet to beat the Habs.

San Jose at Chicago
When: Sunday, Dec. 18 at 7:00 pm ET
Where: United Center, Chicago, IL
TV: CNCAL/WGN
Analysis: San Jose versus Chicago is a big Western Conference throw down this Sunday, Dec. 18. Both teams have their eyes set on making it to the Stanley Cup Finals. San Jose is 16-11-1 straight up as of Dec. 12 while Chicago is 18-8-3-1 straight up as of Dec. 12.
Who wins in this battle? Chicago does. The Blackhawks are an amazing 12-2-2-1 straight up at home this season. That’s almost as good as Montreal. Since this is a Western Conference matchup versus a team that could challenge the Blackhawks for supremacy in the West, I think that the Blackhawks make a statement on Sunday.
Chicago takes it.
