Tennis betting odds at the online sportsbook give you two basic choices. There is the option of betting a player to win a tournament before it begins and there are also matchups offered throughout the tournament. Let’s look at both of these options.
Odds to Win the Tournament
The option to bet on a player to win a tournament is normally only available on the Grand Slam events. This is where you simply take a player to win the tournament at odds of 2-1 up to 100-1 or more. Someone like Rafael Nadal may be listed at odds of 2-1 while some of the players outside the top 10 in the world rankings may be listed at odds of 100-1 or more.
Tennis Betting Matchups
The matchups are where most gamblers concentrate their wagering. These matchups simply follow the matches for the tournament with action starting in the first round and continuing until the final. Tennis betting odds are based on money lines similar in some respects to baseball odds. In baseball you can have a heavy priced favorite that the public loves and continues to bet. This drives the odds higher. The same thing happens in tennis. If a player like Serena Williams is a favorite of -250 to win a particular match her odds may go up to -350 or greater if money comes in on her to win. Just like baseball though, it doesn’t matter how high the odds go as long as she wins. And the best players usually win in tennis. Sometimes in certain situations you can find value going against a star but a lot of factors have to be in your favor. Tennis is not a team sport and can’t be bet the same way as football, basketball or baseball. The goal is to find the better player that is favored at a reasonable price in tennis betting.
Once in a while taking a shot at underdogs is not a bad bet. Early rounds of the four Grand Slams are good times to look at underdogs. When Wimbledon comes around it is often worth taking a chance on a “surface” specialist to win as an underdog.
