How to Bet on the NFL

Are You Ready To Bet on The NFL?

No other sport comes close to matching the popularity of the NFL if you look at the bets made on every single game throughout the season; when it comes down to it, online betting on the NFL reigns supreme. It shouldn't surprise you that the Super Bowl is hands down the most bet sports event in the world in terms of the handle. If you're just dipping your toes and starting out with NFL betting, or whether this isn't your first rodeo but need a refresher, we've got all you need right here at BetPhoenix - starting with this quick intro on how to bet on the NFL.

How To Bet On The NFL

NFL Spread Betting

By far, spread betting is the most popular way to bet on NFL football. The odds are set as a point spread by making one team the favorite to win by a certain number of points. This means the favorite has to win by more than the "point spread" in order to cover and payout if you bet on that team. If this doesn't happen, the underdog would cover - unless, of course, the winning margin is the same as the spread - in which case the bet is considered a push, and the risked amount is returned to the bettor.

NFL Totals

If you're betting on NFL totals, it's much like point spread betting, except that your bet is on whether the combined final score of the game will go over or under the "total" posted by the sportsbook. This is why you'll find this type of bet sometimes referred to as "Over/Under."

NFL Moneyline Betting

Moneyline betting was invented before the point spread, and it still remains a popular way of betting on football games. In this type of bet, all you do is pick the team you believe will win the game outright. The favorite team is not given a points handicap that it has to cover. Oddsmakers, instead, set a line on each team with bigger moneyline favorites paying out less if they win, while bigger underdogs paying out more if they cover.

NFL Prop Betting

A "prop" bet is a type of side bet where you wager on something other than the final outcome of a game. In NFL football, you can usually find them in all manner of player or team props, such as how many yards a running back will cover or how many touchdowns will a quarterback make. You'll find these bets to be especially popular when the Super Bowl comes around when you can bet on practically anything you can imagine like the coin toss or the halftime show.

NFL Parlay Betting

Parlays are special types of bets where you can select between two and 12 teams for which the bets are linked together. Rather than betting on the single outcomes of bets, you're pooling multiple games together in a parlay. The payout can be massive if you win all of your selections; the more games you pick, the higher the payout. However, the caveat is that if one of your picks loses then you lose the bet altogether.

NFL Teaser Betting

Teasers are a special type of parlay where the spread or total is adjusted by a certain amount of points, which makes it more likely for each side to cover. The payout is, therefore, less on winning teasers because of the lower risk involved in losing the bet. Typically, NFL teasers can include between two and 10 teams where you "tease" the line by 6, 6.5, 7, or in some cases 13 points.

NFL First-Half Betting

First-half betting isn’t that much different than when you bet on a whole game, except that you’re betting on the outcome of the first half. Anything that happens in the second half doesn't matter. The most notable difference is that you'll usually find fewer types of bets available to bet on. Typically, you'll only be able to bet on the point spreads and totals. For big games, you might find a few other wagers, too.

NFL Quarters

The majority of sportsbooks only offer bets on the final outcome of the particular contest. However, BetPhoenix offers you bets on the 1st quarter for sports like the NFL and NBA. The quarter spread is used to determine which team will be the winner at the end of the 1st quarter.

NFL Halftime Lines

You can also place in-game bets being placed DURING halftime, where you bet on the outcome of the second half, known as the halftime, or 2nd half, line. The 2nd half-line accounts for what happened in the first half to help determine how the rest of the game will play out.

NFL Futures Betting

In addition to betting on single games, you can bet on how a team will fare in a future event, for example, on whether a team will win the Super Bowl at the end of the season. You can also bet on who will win each conference, division, and even on how many games a team will win in the regular season. These futures bets are usually available all year long and can lead to big payouts if a dark horse surprises the rest of the field.
