What is the Australia A-League?

The Australia A-League, also known as the A-League Men, is the country's top-flight league, organized by the FA Football Australia Federation, the nation's FIFA-affiliated governing body for football.

Australian natives already played possum-skin ball games, which made it easy for the sport to be widely accepted with the arrival of British colonizers. As early as 1850, eleven-a-side games were being played in Melbourne and Campbell. Local rules diverged from the European style of football until a new wave of European migrants arrived in the 1880s, with local teams gradually adopting the official football rules through the 1900s. The first national organization arrived in 1911, but a system with regional competitions prevailed until 1977, when the NSL National Soccer League was created, maintaining a two-conference system, later transitioning to a national single tournament in 1987. Still, the league declined in the 1990s with an increasing departure of top players to other leagues, a lack of sponsorships, and diminished revenues. The Australian Government stepped in through an Independent Soccer Review Committee, determining the NSL as financially unviable and tasking the FA Football Australia Federation with the creation of a new national league.

The Australia A-League was founded in 2004, with the top eight teams, one from each Australian major city, plus a team from New Zealand. The participant teams of the 2005-06 inaugural season were Adelaide United from Adelaide, Central Coast Mariners from Gosford, Melbourne Victory from Melbourne, Newcastle Jets from Newcastle, New Zealand Knights from Auckland, Perth Glory from Perth, Queensland Roar from Brisbane, and Sydney FC from Sydney.

The current Australian football league system is managed by the FA Football Australia Federation, overseeing the Australia A-League as the top-flight league with 12 teams, including one from New Zealand, and the Australia National Premier Leagues, as a regional second tier, with 94 teams divided in 8 division, each one under the state level federations: Australian Capital Territory, Queensland, New South Wales, Northern New South Wales, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria and Western Australia, which determine the second tier champion through the NPL Championship, a knock-out competition with every regional champion. Additionally, the FA Football Australia Federation administers the Australia Cup, a knock-out tournament that includes teams from all tiers of the Australian Football Pyramid.

Current teams (as of the 2023 season):

  • Adelaide United - Adelaide
  • Brisbane Roar - Brisbane Suncorp
  • Central Coast Mariners - Gosford
  • Macarthur FC - Campbelltown
  • Melbourne City - Melbourne
  • Melbourne Victory - Melbourne
  • Newcastle Jets - Newcastle
  • Perth Glory - Perth
  • Sydney FC - Sydney
  • Wellington Phoenix - Wellington
  • Western Sydney Wanderers - Parramatta
  • Western United - Wyndham

The season is played between October and May, similar to the European Football calendar. Each of the 12 clubs plays against each other two or three times in a round-robin format of 26 matchdays. Teams with two home games against a particular opponent one season will play one home game in that matchup in the following season. A single table with the usual three points per win, one point per draw, and no points per loss determines the winner. Teams are ranked by points, and in case of a tie, the tie-breaking criteria follow goal differential, goals scored, head-to-head score, goal differential in the matchup, and disciplinary points based on cards received, culminating in a coin toss for persisting ties.

Similarly to the MLS from the United States and Canada and the Canadian Premier League, the Australia A-League does not exercise other leagues' relegation and promotion mechanisms.

Regarding international events, as a member of the AFC, Australia A-League teams qualify for the AFC Champions League, with the champion qualifying for the AFC Champions League Elite League stage. If the champion were to be from New Zealand, which is a member of the Oceania Football Confederation, the runner-up would earn the AFC Champions League berth.

How to Bet on the Australia A-League

BetPhoenix.ag not only offers you the best Australia A-League Odds, but we also provide you with many helpful tools, like this Australia A-League odds guide, to introduce you to the numerous moneymaking opportunities available when betting on the Australia A-League betting lines, helping you improve your chances of winning.

Australia A-League Point Spreads

The Australia A-League Point Spreads bets, similarly to other major sports like football, baseball, and basketball, are based on a handicapped margin of victory established on a projected game result. If an Australia A-League betting lines show a point spread of 1.5 for an upcoming game, the favorite team (-1.5) must win by at least two goals for your bet to be a winner, while betting on the underdog (+1.5) can lose by one goal, tie the game or win outright for your bet to be a win. The .5 fraction is used to avoid a push in the wagers.

This is an example of an Australia A-League Point Spread, as you would find it listed in BetPhoenix:

Team - Points Spread Odds

Sydney FC -1.5

Melbourne City +1.5

In this case, the -1.5 points spread indicates that Sydney FC is the favorite to win by a margin of two goals against Melbourne City. Conversely, Melbourne City is the underdog and can lose by a margin of less than two goals. These are the likely results of this bet:

· Sydney FC wins by two or more goals: Sydney FC bettors win.

· Sydney FC wins by one goal: Melbourne City bettors win.

· The game is a draw/tie: Melbourne City bettors win.

· Melbourne City wins the game: Melbourne City bettors win.

Australia A-League Moneylines

Australia A-League Moneyline is always the most straightforward betting option. Your pick reflects who you expect to be the outright winner of the game. A negative odds value indicates the favorite, while a positive value indicates an underdog. Australia A-League Moneyline uses a $100 base American odds system, in which larger numbers indicate a stronger favorite or weaker underdog.

The two-way Australia A-League Moneyline, in which the Australia A-League betting lines are focused on either one of the two sides winning, removing the impact of a tie or draw, in which case the bet would be a push. There is also a three-way Australia A-League Moneyline, in which the Australia A-League betting lines offer odds values for the home team winning, the visitor team winning, or the match ending in a draw or tie.

This is an example of a Two-Way Australia A-League Moneyline, as you would find it listed in BetPhoenix:

Team - Moneyline

Sydney FC -350

Melbourne City +250

In this case, if you bet to win $100 on Sydney FC -350, as favorites, you would need to risk $350, while betting $100 on Melbourne City +250 as an underdog, you would receive $250 if Melbourne City wins the game. If the match ends in a tie, the wager would be a push, which means the bet is voided and refunded.

This is an example of a Three-Way Australia A-League Moneyline, as you would find it listed in BetPhoenix:

Team - Moneyline

Sydney FC -170

Draw +290

Melbourne City +300

If you bet to win $100 on Sydney FC -170 as favorites, you would need to risk $170. If you bet $100 on the draw +290, you would receive $290 if the game ends in a tie. And betting $100 on Melbourne City +300 as an underdog, you would receive $300 if Melbourne City wins the game.

At BetPhoenix, our Australia A-League odds will give you the best available Moneyline prices and the tightest point spread odds offered by any sportsbook.

Australia A-League Over/Under Totals

The Australia A-League Totals bet is based on a projected final score that includes both teams, independently on which side wins. Australia A-League Totals are represented in an Over/Under set, where you can pick if you expect this result to be over or under this estimated line.

This is an example of an Australia A-League Over/Under Totals as you would find it listed in BetPhoenix:

Australia A-League Totals – Sydney FC vs. Melbourne City

Total: 2.5

Over odds: +130

Under odds: -160

In this case, the Australia A-League Over/Under of 2.5 means that if the match ends with a combined score of three or more goals, the Over wins; if the total score is two or less, the Under wins. If you bet to win $100 on the Under -160, you would need to risk $160 and win if the game ends with 2 goals or less. Betting $100 on the Over +130, you would receive $130 if the game ends with 3 goals or more.

Australia A-League Parlays

Australia A-League Parlay is a wager type in which two or more Australia A-League betting lines are combined to form a single wager with a considerably higher payout. However, all selected Australia A-League betting lines must win for the parlay wager to win. You can combine point spreads, moneylines, over/under totals, and other wagers. You can also combine favorites and underdogs. The more bets you add to your Australia A-League parlay, the odds multiply accordingly in your favor.

Using the example, a two-line Australia A-League Parlay could be as follows:

Sydney FC -170

Sydney FC vs. Melbourne City Total: Over 2.5 +130

By combining the Sydney FC Moneyline -170 and Total Over 2.5 +130 for the Sydney FC vs. Melbourne City game on a 2-team parlay risking $100, the combined odds would be +265 with a payout for this parlay of $365.29, about 3.5 times your bet, instead of risking $100 to bet on each separately.

Australia A-League Prop Bets

Australia A-League prop bets are one of the most exciting ways to bet on the outcome of the games. The most popular German Bundesliga Prop Bets include many possibilities. Team prop bets include lines to bet on which team will score first, how many shots on goal will be made, how many corner kicks will occur, how many cards will be sanctioned, and a long etcetera. Player props bets include who will score a goal during the game, who will score the first goal of the match, who will score multiple goals, how many shots on goal a player will make, etc.
