What is the Japan J1 League?

The Japan J1 League is the country's top-flight league, organized by the Japan Professional Football League, also known as the J.League, an independent body under the authority of the JFA Japan Football Association that operates top professional football leagues in Japan.

Football in Japan was introduced by Archibald Lucius Douglas, Lieutenant-Commander of the Royal Navy, who taught Japanese Navy cadets at the Imperial Japanese Navy Academy in 1873, where he was an instructor. The sport became immediately popular, rivaling national favorites like baseball, sumo, and contact sports. The Emperor's Cup began play in 1921, and by the mid-1920s, football had regional tournaments throughout the country and was played in every high school. The first professional tournament, the Japan Soccer League, started in 1965, the precursor to the modern tournament.

The J. League was founded in 1991 to separate professional football from the JFA Japan Football Association, overseeing the Japan J1 League as the top-flight league with 18 teams, expanding to 20 teams in 2024, and the Japan J2 League as the second tier, with 22 teams, and the Japan J3 League as the third tier, with 20 teams. Additionally, the J. League administers the J. League Cup, named the J. League Levain Cup of Japan, a knock-out tournament that includes teams from the top three tiers of the Japanese Football Pyramid.

In counterpart, the JFA Japan Football Association manages the semiprofessional JFL Japan Football League as the fourth tier and the JRL Japanese Regional Leagues as the fifth and sixth tier. Furthermore, the JFA administers other major national competitions, like the JFA Emperor's Cup, a knock-out tournament that includes teams from all levels of the Japanese Football Pyramid, and the Japanese Super Cup, named the Fujifilm Super Cup, played between the winners of the J1 League and the Emperor's Cup.

Current teams (as of the 2023 season):

  • Albirex Niigata, Niigata Prefecture
  • Avispa Fukuoka, Fukuoka Prefecture
  • Cerezo Osaka, Osaka Prefecture
  • FC Tokyo, Tokyo
  • Gamba Osaka, Osaka Prefecture
  • Hokkaido Consadole Sapporo, Hokkaido Prefecture
  • Kashima Antlers, Ibaraki Prefecture
  • Kashiwa Reysol, Chiba Prefecture
  • Kawasaki Frontale, Kanagawa Prefecture
  • Nagoya Grampus, Aichi Prefecture
  • Sagan Tosu, Saga Prefecture
  • Sanfrecce Hiroshima, Hiroshima Prefecture
  • Kyoto Sanga, Kyoto Prefecture
  • Shonan Bellmare, Kanagawa Prefecture
  • Urawa Red Diamonds, Saitama Prefecture
  • Vissel Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture
  • Yokohama Marinos, Kanagawa Prefecture
  • Yokohama FC, Kanagawa Prefecture

The season is played between February and December, a format more common in Asia, as opposed to the August through May European calendar. Each club plays against each other twice, in a double round-robin format, at home and away, for 34 matchdays, with the usual three points per win, one point per draw, and no points per loss. Teams are ranked by points, and in case of a tie, the tie-breaking criteria follow goal differential, goals scored, head-to-head score, and disciplinary points based on cards received. In case of a persisting tie, it would be decided on a draw, with the exception of the champion, in which case both clubs would be named co-champions.

The Japan J1 League includes a relegation and promotion system in which, after every season, the last team in the table is relegated to the Japan J2 League, with the champion of this second-tier level being promoted to take its place. The relegation system gives additional excitement to the competition, raising the stakes in the fight at the lower part of the table to avoid relegation.

Regarding international events, as a member of the AFC, Japan J1 League teams qualify for the AFC Champions League, with the champion qualifying for the AFC Champions League Elite League stage and the runner-up earning a spot in the AFC Champions League 2 group stage. Additionally, the winner of the J. League Cup plays the J. League Cup / Copa Sudamericana Championship against the Copa Sudamericana Champions.

How to Bet on the Japan J1 League

BetPhoenix.ag not only offers you the best Japan J1 League Odds, but we also provide you with many helpful tools, like this Japan J1 League odds guide, to introduce you to the numerous moneymaking opportunities available when betting on the Japan J1 League betting lines, helping you improve your chances of winning.

Japan J1 League Point Spreads

The Japan J1 League Point Spreads bets, similarly to other major sports like football, baseball, and basketball, are based on a handicapped margin of victory established on a projected game result. If a Japan J1 League betting lines show a point spread of 1.5 for an upcoming game, the favorite team (-1.5) must win by at least two goals for your bet to be a winner, while betting on the underdog (+1.5) can lose by one goal, tie the game or win outright for your bet to be a win. The .5 fraction is used to avoid a push in the wagers.

This is an example of a Japan J1 League Point Spread, as you would find it listed in BetPhoenix:

Team - Points Spread Odds

Yokohama Marinos -1.5

Kawasaki Frontale +1.5

In this case, the -1.5 points spread indicates that Yokohama Marinos is the favorite to win by a margin of two goals against Kawasaki Frontale. Conversely, Kawasaki Frontale is the underdog and can lose by a margin of less than two goals. These are the likely results of this bet:

· Yokohama Marinos wins by two or more goals: Yokohama Marinos bettors win.

· Yokohama Marinos wins by one goal: Kawasaki Frontale bettors win.

· The game is a draw/tie: Kawasaki Frontale bettors win.

· Kawasaki Frontale wins the game: Kawasaki Frontale bettors win.

Japan J1 League Moneylines

Japan J1 League Moneyline is always the most straightforward betting option. Your pick reflects who you expect to be the outright winner of the game. A negative odds value indicates the favorite, while a positive value indicates an underdog. Japan J1 League Moneyline uses a $100 base American odds system, in which larger numbers indicate a stronger favorite or weaker underdog.

The two-way Japan J1 League Moneyline, in which the Japan J1 League betting lines are focused on either one of the two sides winning, removing the impact of a tie or draw, in which case the bet would be a push. There is also a three-way Japan J1 League Moneyline, in which the Japan J1 League betting lines offer odds values for the home team winning, the visitor team winning, or the match ending in a draw or tie.

This is an example of a Two-Way Japan J1 League Moneyline, as you would find it listed in BetPhoenix:

Team - Moneyline

Yokohama Marinos -150

Kawasaki Frontale +110

In this case, if you bet to win $100 on Yokohama Marinos -150, as favorites, you would need to risk $150, while betting $100 on Kawasaki Frontale +110 as an underdog, you would receive $110 if Kawasaki Frontale wins the game. If the match ends in a tie, the wager would be a push, which means the bet is voided and refunded.

This is an example of a Three-Way Japan J1 League Moneyline, as you would find it listed in BetPhoenix:

Team - Moneyline

Yokohama Marinos -140

Draw +220

Kawasaki Frontale +210

If you bet to win $100 on Yokohama Marinos -140 as favorites, you would need to risk $140. If you bet $100 on the draw +220, you would receive $220 if the game ends in a tie. And betting $100 on Kawasaki Frontale +210 as an underdog, you would receive $210 if Kawasaki Frontale wins the game.

At BetPhoenix, our Japan J1 League odds will give you the best available Moneyline prices and the tightest point spread odds offered by any sportsbook.

Japan J1 League Over/Under Totals

The Japan J1 League Totals bet is based on a projected final score that includes both teams, independently on which side wins. Japan J1 League Totals are represented in an Over/Under set, where you can pick if you expect this result to be over or under this estimated line.

This is an example of a Japan J1 League Over/Under Totals as you would find it listed in BetPhoenix:

Japan J1 League Totals – Yokohama Marinos vs. Kawasaki Frontale

Total: 2.5

Over odds: +120

Under odds: -150

In this case, the Japan J1 League Over/Under of 2.5 means that if the match ends with a combined score of three or more goals, the Over wins; if the total score is two or less, the Under wins. If you bet to win $100 on the Under -150, you would need to risk $150 and win if the game ends with 2 goals or less. Betting $100 on the Over +120, you would receive $120 if the game ends with 3 goals or more.

Japan J1 League Parlays

Japan J1 League Parlay is a wager type in which two or more Japan J1 League betting lines are combined to form a single wager with a considerably higher payout. However, all selected Japan J1 League betting lines must win for the parlay wager to win. You can combine point spreads, moneylines, over/under totals, and other wagers. You can also combine favorites and underdogs. The more bets you add to your Japan J1 League parlay, the odds multiply accordingly in your favor.

Using the example, a two-line Japan J1 League Parlay could be as follows:

Yokohama Marinos -140

Yokohama Marinos vs. Kawasaki Frontale Total: Over 2.5 +120

By combining the Yokohama Marinos Moneyline -120 and Total Over 2.5 +120 for the Yokohama Marinos vs. Kawasaki Frontale game on a 2-team parlay risking $100, the combined odds would be +277 with a payout for this parlay of $377.15, about 3.5 times your bet, instead of risking $100 to bet on each separately.

Japan J1 League Prop Bets

Japan J1 League prop bets are one of the most exciting ways to bet on the outcome of the games. The most popular German Bundesliga Prop Bets include many possibilities. Team prop bets include lines to bet on which team will score first, how many shots on goal will be made, how many corner kicks will occur, how many cards will be sanctioned, and a long etcetera.
