Though the Spanish giants are the favorites, time is running out for Lionel Messi to bring another Champions League title back to Barcelona.

Barcelona’s disastrous early exits in the last two tournaments, losing to AS Roma and Liverpool, is something that has to weigh heavily on the player’s minds.

Especially concerning is the absence of Luis Suárez, Ousmane Dembélé, Jordi Alba, and Sergi Roberto; can Messi’s greatness lift the souls of their B Team replacements?

Barcelona makes the trip to Italy having strung together a three-match win streak in La Liga, though, and they’ll likely score at least one valuable away goal back to Camp Nou where their chances of winning are higher.

It’s going to be an exciting challenge for both squads as it’s their first Champions League games at the helm. Quique Setien hasn’t had too much success in away matches, so it’ll be interesting to see how he plans out the game to find the back of the net.

Setien’s expected lineup is: Ter Stegen; Semedo, Pique, Lenglet, Firpo; De Jong, Busquets, Arthur; Messi, Griezmann, Vidal

It takes a big man to fill Carlo Ancelotti’s shoes, but Gennaro Gattuso seems to have finally found his size. Gattuso lost his first six games in all competitions; something which Napoli was not accustomed to, nor tolerated.

However, Gattuso has righted the ship and had led Napoli to six wins from seven matches.  The hosts have an excellent European scoring record in Naples; including qualifiers, Napoli have played twenty-two home games in Champions League history, and they’ve scored in all but one.

Napoli doesn’t have a prayer of winning the Scudetto; currently, they sit nine points outside the top four in the Serie A table, which means if they want to be in the 2020-21 Champions League, they’ll have to win it this year.

It’s fortunate for Gennaro’s team that Luis Suarez, and other key Barcelona players, are out with injuries. Napoli is a difficult opponent at home and will make Barcelona fight for a goal.

It’s improbable Barcelona doesn’t leave Italy without an away goal; the question is, should you focus on Messi and leave Barcelona’s B team replacements unchecked? It’s a gamble that Gattuso can’t lose.

Here’s how Gattuso’s probable lineup looks like: Ospina; Lorenzo, Manolas, Maksimovic, Rui; Ruiz, Demme, Elmas; Politano, Mertens, Insigne

Prediction: It’s do or die for Messi; this may be his last chance for winning another Champions with Barcelona. But, Napoli will dig in and not give away an inch to the Spaniards. It’s going to be a battle to a draw.
