UEFA Champions: Second Day of the Second Leg of the Knockout

The second day of the second leg of the UEFA Champions League is coming up, one day after Real won convincingly over Roma, leaving the Italians out of the competition, and Wolfsburg triumphed over Gent 1-0, also passing through to the quarterfinals. Let’s take a look at today’s games…

Chelsea FC vs Paris Saint-Germain

  • Wednesday, March 09, 2016 2:45 PM ET

Betting on Chelsea

Chelsea is still in the run to make it to the quarterfinals, albeit being one goal down. Because their goal came on French soil, the advantage of now playing on their home pitch at Stamford Bridge becomes paramount.

Chelsea has been solid as of late at Stamford Bridge and have won their last two home games by a wide margin. It’s going to be difficult for the Parisian team to beat them there and it should give them an extra edge.

Under new manager Guus Hiddink, the Blues have resurged, winning eight games, playing to a draw on seven while only losing one match overall (to PSG).

Cesc Fabregas and Diego Costa have both received needed rest, not playing in their game against Stoke City on Saturday, heading into this game and should be ready to go against PSG. The Blues only need a 1-0 win to pass through and it’s something they can very well achieve playing in front of their home crowd and making sure they batten down the hatches to not allow PSG’s forwards to maneuver the ball behind their defenses.

Betting on Paris Saint-Germain

PSG has slipped as of late. With another loss, their second in the last three games, the Parisians have shown some vulnerability in their powerful play.

Though David Luiz, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Laurent Blanc did not play in their last match against Montpellier, it does open up some concerning issues for this team heading into this game. Considering Marco Verratti and Blaise Mautuidi are both questionable due to injury, PSG might be vulnerable at midfield and their play-making abilities limited.

PSG’s advantage though lies in their 2-1 lead in the overall scoreboard. They don’t have to attack Chelsea and could just wait for opportunities to strike, relying on their wing’s abilities to score goals on counterattacks.

Free Pick: PSG gets at least one goal and passes through.

Benfica vs Zenit Petersburg

  • Time: Wednesday, March 09, 2016 12:00 PM ET

Betting on Benfica

Benfica holds the lead, though its a slight one at 1-0 which gets more complicated as they head to Zenit’s home pitch.

Benfica does have momentum on their side, having won recently against 1-0 over Sporting and a 17 win record over their last 18 games in all competitions.

Injuries to players might be an issue to Benfica, as six of them are unavailable for today’s match.

Betting on Zenit

The Russian team is confident playing on their home pitch. However, they cannot afford even a goal because they’re down by one goal and would need at least two or more to make it through.

They do own the advantage in the series against Zenit, winning three of five games they’ve played in the UEFA Champions.

They’ve also been deadly effective at home, not conceding a loss in their last 7 games against Portuguese teams, winning 5 and drawing on 2 occasions.

Free Pick: Zenit wins at home, overcoming the goal deficit and passing through.
