The Madeira Islands Open in Portugal Preview and Predictions

2014 Madeira Islands Open

The European Tour will play the 1,500th event in their history this week with the Madeira Islands Open in Portugal. Unfortunately for the European Tour the event is not likely to generate a lot of attention since it is opposite of The Players Championship in the United States. None of the world’s top players are in Portugal and you have to look really hard to find players that are recognizable. Ricardo Santos, who won this event two years ago, is listed as the favorite. Let’s look at the event and golf picks.

Top Contenders

Santos did win this event two years ago and he is playing in front of his home fans so he is the obvious choice to win. If he doesn’t come though then it could be anyone. Oliver Fisher is the second choice in the betting while Lucas Bjerregaard is the third choice. Other golfers listed at less than 20-1 include Jordi Garica Pinto, Adrien Saddier, Mikko Korhonen, James Morrison and Rhys Davies.

Tournament Notes

This will be the 1,500th event for the European Tour. How many people will actually be paying attention is the question. Two years ago it was Ricardo Santos winning in front of his home fans at Clube de Golf do Santo da Serra. Last year it was Peter Uilhein winning this even. Uihein has not played well this season and he is not returning to defend his title. Other former champs in the field this week are Jarmo Sandelin, Bradley Dredge, Daniel Vancsik, Alastair Forsyth, Estanislao Goya and James Morrison.

Golf in Madeira goes back to the 1920’s and 1930’s at Santo da Serra. The nine hole course at Serra opened in 1937 while the 18-hole course opened in 1991. The Madeira Islands Open has one of the smallest prize pools on the European Tour and is actually a dual event with the Challenge Tour.

Golf Picks

Santos may end up winning this event again but there is not much value in taking him. I will go with Oliver Wilson at odds of about 15-1. I will also take a shot with James Morrison at golf betting odds of 20-1.
