Netherlands National Team Preview, Schedule and Group B Analysis

Netherlands Football Team

Will this finally be the year that the Netherlands comes through and wins the World Cup? They nearly pulled it off four years ago but lost in the final to Spain. They have basically the same team they had four years ago which is either good news or bad news depending upon how you look at the team.

Key Players

This year’s Netherlands looks a lot like the one that finished second at the 2010 World Cup. They have stars Arjen Robben, Robin van Persie, Wesley Sneijder and Rafael van Der Vaart. There are not many teams that have two scorers like Robben and van Persie. In fact, van Persie is the all-time scorer for the Netherlands. He has scored 41 goals in 79 appearances. He scored 11 goals in qualifying.

Manager

The Netherlands is coached by Van Gaal who has won league titles with Ajax, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and AZ Alkmaar. He took over in 2010 and he has a good staff led by to help him. Van Gaal made some changes from the 2010 team and his team has won 17 straight matches.

Team Notes

The Netherlands won 9 of 10 in qualifying and scored 34 goals. Their only blemish was a 2-2 draw against Estonia. How much credit they get is in debate and their opposition was weak as none of the teams they played were ranked in the Top 30 of FIFA’s rankings. They will get an immediate chance for revenge against Spain as they open up group play against the 2010 World Cup champs.

The Netherlands has been the bridesmaid way too many times for their liking. They lost the final last year to Spain and they also lost it in 1974 and in 1978 to Brazil. They will be playing in their 10th World Cup at the 2014 World Cup which begins in June in Brazil.
