Group of Death USA

If the United States is to make it to the knockout round in the 2014 World Cup they are going to have to find a way to beat out either Germany or Portugal. The USA is in Group G with Germany, Portugal and Ghana. Many people are calling it the Group of Death. It is ranked as the toughest group by the current FIFA rankings. Let’s look at the Group of Death and the rankings for all of the other groups.

Group of Death

Group D has the top-seed Germany, Portugal, the USA and Ghana. Germany is definitely a contender to win the entire World Cup and Portugal has one of the best players in the world in Cristiano Ronaldo. The United States has looked really good under head coach Jurgen Klinsmann but they will be underdogs against Germany and Portugal and Ghana is no bargain either. The average FIFA ranking for Group D is 11.25 which makes it the toughest group in the 2014 World Cup.

Other Group Rankings

The second toughest group according to the FIFA rankings is Group B which has Spain, the Netherlands and Chile. Australia is the weak link in that group which is why Group B is not quite as tough as Group D.

Group D also looks very difficult with Uruguay, Italy and England to go along with Costa Rica but the FIFA ranking has the group as the third toughest.

Group A has Brazil as the standout but the group is not a total pushover as it does have Croatia, Mexico and Cameroon. According to FIFA it is the next toughest group.

Group C is all about Colombia and then it will be a fight between Japan, Ivory Coast and Greece for second.

Group H has Belgium and Russia but it also has South Korea and Algeria who are weak.

Group E looks easy with Switzerland a week top seed to go along with Honduras, Ecuador and France.

Group F looks to be a walk for Argentina as they won’t get any challenge from Iran, Bosnia-Herzegovina or Nigeria.
