Hoppertunity Odds to Win Opened as a +650 Choice

With a strong second-place finish to California Chrome in the Santa Anita Derby, Hoppertunity will garner plenty of attention for the 2014 Kentucky Derby, especially with Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert and Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith as additional drawing cards.

Hoppertunity Overview

Hoppertunity is a 3-year-old colt by Any Given Saturday, Refugee, and Unaccounted For. Hoppertunity is owned by Karl Watson, Mike Pegram, and Paul Weitman. The three owners have been lifelong friends and have enjoyed a considerable amount of success together as owners. Mike Pegram has been a long-time client of Hoppertunity trainer Bob Baffert and the two enjoyed wins in the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes with Real Quiet. Lookin' at Lucky was another horse that this group had fame and success with. Bob Baffert is the trainer of Hoppertunity and that name alone carries plenty of cache with horse players and the horse game establishment. Baffert has three career Kentucky Derby wins with Silver Charm, Real Quiet, and War Emblem. Baffert is tied for the all-time record at the Preakness Stakes with 5 wins. He is a three-time Eclipse Award winner as the top trainer and has also won two Kentucky Oaks. With jockey Mike Smith, Hoppertunity again has the very best. Smith rode Giacomo to the 2005 Kentucky Derby winner’s circle and was aboard Princess of Sylmar to win the 2013 Kentucky Oaks. Smith also has won in the Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes. He is an Eclipse Award-winning jockey and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2003.

The Record

Hoppertunity has a total of 5 career starts with 2 wins and 1 place with total career earnings of $610,720 and has run all 5 of his career races in 2014. Hoppertunity is coming off a second place finish to California Chrome in the Santa Anita Derby at Santa Anita Park in Southern California on April 5. The Santa Anita Derby is a grade one race that is one and one-eighth miles in length. Hoppertunity paid $4.00 and $3.60 for the place finish at Santa Anita.
