Why Bet on the Dodgers?

The Dodgers took down the Braves and Brewers to earn their second straight trip to the Fall Classic. LA won Game 7 of the NLCS in Milwaukee on Saturday night 5-1 to advance to the World Series and they’ll be shooting to win the title for the first time since 1988.

Behind a fantastic performance from Cody Bellinger, who hit a game-winning two-run homer in the second inning, the Dodgers head into this game pumped and primed to take on the Red Sox. Bellinger was also named the NLCS MVP despite only hitting 200 in the series, with four RBI, three runs scored and two stolen bases. Yasiel Puig went 3-for-4 with a three-run home run in Game 7. He’s now batting .310/.412/.517 in 11 playoff contests.

Meanwhile, ace pitcher Clayton Kershaw threw a scoreless ninth inning Saturday, but it all indicates he’ll be starting Game 1. Kershaw easily closed out the game against the Brewers, getting Travis Shaw to ground out before fanning Jesus Aguilar and Mike Moustakas for the win.

The Dodgers’ star threw 98 pitches with seven innings of one-run play in last Wednesday’s Game 5 vs the Brewers. Kershaw pitched four scoreless innings in Game 7 of last year’s World Series only three days after throwing 94 pitches in a Game 5 start.

The Dodgers’ regular season 3.38 ERA led the NL and ranked second in the majors, only trailing Houston’s 3.11 mark. The Dodgers also topped the NL in strikeouts (1,565) and WHIP (1.15), while ranking second with a .230 opponents’ batting average.

LA’s bullpen also had the fewest walks in the National League with 422 and held opponents to a league-best .290 OBP. The Dodgers’ bullpen had a 1.45 ERA in the NLCS.

Why Bet on the Red Sox?

The Red Sox closed out the ALCS against Houston in five games with a 4-1 win on Thursday. Boston hasn’t lost a road game yet in these playoffs. Jackie Bradley Jr. was the 2018 ALCS MVP, putting a pair of homers — including a grand slam in Game 3 — under his belt and also drew four walks. His average is .200 this postseason, but he’s .400 in on-base percentage and is batting at .667.

Boston’s star outfielder Mookie Betts has fielded at second base and could settle in that position at Dodger Stadium when Boston loses the DH. It’s expected that regular designated hitter J.D. Martinez will start every game of the series, so putting Betts at second would keep Jackie Bradley in the lineup at centerfield.

Manager Alex Cora will likely stack the deck with right-handed hitters given the Dodgers will start with Kershaw in Game 1. This likely means that Pearce will start at first base instead of Mitch Moreland, and Eduardo Nunez at third base instead of Rafael Devers.

Ace pitcher Chris Sale is expected to take the mound in Game 1. Sale missed his start in Game 5 of the ALCS due to a stomach issue that ended up with him being hospitalized. He last pitched in Game 1 of the ALCS against the Astros and went 12-4 with a 2.11 ERA in 27 starts in the regular season.

Sale only pitched once in the ALCS, in Game 1, but a worrying stat reared its head in that game. Sale’s fastball speed has dropped off drastically as the season has worn on: in June, July and August, he showed an average velocity of 97.38 mph, while in his four starts in September, he had an average velocity of 93.56 mph. In Game 1 of the ALCS vs Houston, his fastball averaged 92 mph and topped out at 96 mph.

Dodgers vs. Red Sox Betting Trends

  • LA Dodgers is 2-5 ATS in its last 7 games
  • LA Dodgers is 11-4 SU in its last 15 games
  • The total has gone UNDER in 4 of LA Dodgers's last 6 games
  • Boston is 6-1 ATS in its last 7 games
  • Boston is 6-1 SU in its last 7 games
  • The total has gone OVER in 4 of Boston's last 5 games

Game Prediction: Fenway Park has been a good place for runs as of late, seeing games go OVER in eight of the last nine games. The total is at 7.5 right now, which seems low considering the above factor and how both starting pitchers are performing.

Pick: OVER 7.5
