New York Yankees Analysis

The Yankees are in the midst of a three-series road swing, and are hoping to make up some ground in the AL East.

They split their four-game series with the Boston Red Sox over the weekend, and will be looking for better results against the Twins.

The Yankees are 4-6 in their last 10 games and now find themselves behind both the Red Sox and Tampa Bay Rays.

The team’s pitching staff hasn’t played very well lately, but are still 5th in the league with a 3.90 ERA. Their 44 quality starts is the 10th best in the league this year.

Things got worse for the Yankees rotation on Monday when the team announced that starter Michael Pineda, who was having a good season, will miss the rest of the year and part of next year after he undergoes Tommy John surgery on Tuesday.

With Pineda out of the lineup, New York will either have to trade for another starter or hope one of their young pitchers is up to the task.

Hitting wise, the Yankees are one of the best in the league with a .262 batting average that ranks 8th in the league. The team has also scored 488 runs, which is the 3rd best mark in baseball.

Aaron Judge leads the way with 100 hits and 66 RBI while Starlin Castro and Brett Gardner have combined for 176 hits and 86 RBI.

Starting Pitcher Analysis

The Yankees will give Luis Cessa the start against the Twins on Tuesday. In three starts, the second year player has a 0-3 record with a 4.18 ERA. Cessa pitched 1.2 innings against the Twins last season allowing one run.

Yankees Trends

  • NY Yankees is 3-7 SU in its last 10 games
  • The total has gone UNDER in 6 of NY Yankees's last 7 games
  • NY Yankees is 6-12 ATS in its last 18 games on the road

Minnesota Twins Analysis

The Twins are currently in second place in the AL Central, 1.5 games behind the Cleveland Indians.

Like the Yankees, the Twins are fighting for the division crown as well as one of the two Wildcard spots.

The Twins lost a three-game series to the Houston Astros over the weekend, and are trying to avoid losing a second consecutive series.

Minnesota has split their last 14 games, so consistency is key for them from now on.

Minnesota has been winning despite not having strong pitching. For the year, Minnesota’s pitching staff has a 4.86 ERA, which is 27th in the league. The 34 quality starts their starters have is 26th in the league, which isn’t very impressive.

While their pitching has been poor, the Twins’ hitting has been less than average. For the year, Minnesota has a .252 batting average, which is 19th in the league, and their 415 runs also leaves them at 26th in baseball.

Brian Dozier leads the Twins with 87 hits and 46 RBI while Miguel Sano and Eddie Rosario have combined for 168 hits.

Starting Pitcher Analysis

The Twins will send Bartolo Colon to the mound to take on the Yankees. Colon, who was released by the Atlanta Braves a few weeks ago, has struggled this year after an outstanding 2016 campaign. In 13 starts, the 44-year-old is 2-8 with an 8.14 ERA. Colon has allowed 23 runs in his last four starts.

Twins Trends

  • Minnesota is 2-4 ATS in its last 6 games
  • Minnesota is 2-4 SU in its last 6 games
  • The total has gone UNDER in 4 of Minnesota's last 6 games

Pick and Predictions

The fact that the Yankees are starting an inexperienced pitcher makes me a little cautious, but the Yankees should be able to get some runs off Colon, so I’m picking New York to get the win.
