Washington Nationals Analysis

The Nationals are the second hottest team in baseball right now, winning their past six games and 10 of their last 12 games.

Their recent stretch has allowed them to open up a 10.5 game lead over the surging Atlanta Braves in the NL East.

Washington is led by Bryce Harper, who is having another MVP level season.

Max Scherzer and Stephen Strasburg have also pitched very well this year and should be in the CY Young award conversation at the end of the season if they keep playing as well as they are.

Washington’s starters have given the team 61 quality starts so far this year, which leads the league. Their combined 4.07 ERA is the 9th best in baseball, and would be much lower if their bullpen wasn’t averaging over five runs per game.

Offensively, the Nationals are also one of the best teams in baseball, boasting a .279 batting average, which is the 2nd best in baseball, and 521 runs, which is also 2nd best.

Washington’s bats have been doing a lot of damage since the All-Star game, scoring 52 runs in their last eight games.

The Nats have outscored their opponents 39-15 since the break despite each outing being on the road.

With the Los Angeles Dodgers, who have won nine straight games, playing so well, the Nationals needs to continue at their current pace if they want to secure home field advantage in the playoffs.

Starting Pitcher Analysis

Gio Gonzalez will get the start for the Nationals. In 19 starts, Gonzalez has an 8-4 record with a 2.66 ERA.

Even though he 3-3 in his last six starts, Gonzalez has pitched well and allowed only five runs in his last four starts.

Gonzalez allowed just four hits and no runs in 8.1 innings of work against Cincinnati last Friday. Washington manager, Dusty Baker commented after the win, that "that was as sharp as I've seen him and the longest he kept his sharpness."

Gonzalez hasn’t faced the Angels since 2014, but he’s 7-2 with a 2,62 ERA over 11 starts.

Nationals Trends

  • Washington is 5-0 ATS in its last 5 games
  • Washington is 5-0 SU in its last 5 games
  • Washington is 5-0 ATS in its last 5 games on the road

Los Angeles Angels Analysis

The Angels are currently fourth in the AL West, 17 games behind the Houston Astros.

While the division lead is currently out of the question, unless the Astros suffer a major meltdown, the Angels still have a chance to earn a Wildcard spot as they are only 3 games behind the New York Yankees, who own the second spot.

The Angels lost to the Nationals last night and will try to split the series with a win on Wednesday.

The biggest problem the Angels have had this season is their offense. Former MVP Mike Trout missed most of the first half of the season but still leads the team with 16 home runs.

For the season, the team is batting .241, which is 27th, and the 385 runs they have scored is 25th in the league.

Starting Pitcher Analysis

The Angels should call on Alex Meyer from Triple-A Salt Lake to take the mound against the Nationals. Meyer, who is 3-5 with a 4.18 ERA, should be well rested and ready to go.

Angels manager Mike Scioscia believes Meyer has gained enough experience, “You look where he was last year or even where he was in spring training, and there's a huge jump. Hopefully, he'll take another step forward."

However, Meyer has been inconsistent in his past few major league starts, with two good games against the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Kansas City Royals but a shaky 3 1/3-inning performance against the Boston Red Sox and a 4 2/3-inning, five-walk start against the New York Yankees.

Angels Trends

  • LA Angels is 2-5 ATS in its last 7 games
  • LA Angels is 3-8 SU in its last 11 games
  • The total has gone UNDER in 5 of LA Angels' last 6 games

Pick and Prediction

Nolasco has been pitching well at home, allowing one run in his last two home starts. Take the Angels in this one.
