Sweet 16 Odds and 3 Best Bets To Consider

March Madness’ Round of 32 belonged to favorites all around, which means the Sweet 16 is filled with blue blood that will pour all the way to the Championship. What can you expect in this round? Let’s jump ahead an look at some of the most important games and their odds to see if there’s any value in betting them.

Sweet 16 Odds and Best Bets

No. 1 Duke vs. No. 4 Virginia Tech

  • When: March 29, 2019, 9:39 PM ET
  • Where: Capital One Arena
  • Point Spread: Duke -7
  • Total: 144.5

Analysis: So far, Duke has gone 0-2 ATS despite all the hype and hoopla surrounding the Blue Devils and their star Zion Williamson. This isn’t to say Williamson doesn’t deserve his standing among basketball folks everywhere, the man is a force of nature. But, no man is an island and certainly he alone does not a team make.

Duke’s latest victory, after all, was barely won by the hair of their chins. This should tell you that although Duke does have arguably one of the best players in recent history, they’re vulnerable against teams that are effective at keeping Williamson at bay. And, Virginia Tech’s defense happens to be designed to force opponents to take shots from the perimeter, a strategy that worked wonders for UCF against Duke.

The line on this game seems high. VT won’t be intimidated, nor pushed around by Duke; instead, I foresee a Hokies team that will stay in the game and maybe even pulls an upset. In the meantime though, I’m taking the Hokies ATS.

Pick: Virginia Tech +7

No. 1 Gonzaga vs. Florida State

  • When: March 28, 2019, 7:09 PM ET
  • Where: Honda Center
  • Point Spread: Gonzaga -7.5
  • Total: 147

Analysis: Though the Bulldogs opened as a 6.5 chalk for this game, the Seminoles bested Gonzaga in this same scenario last year, edging out a 75-60 win. Heading into this tournament, the Seminoles were on a scorching 8-1 SU and 4-5 ATS run over their last nine games. Their only defeat was against Duke in the ACC tournament final.

This isn’t to say Gonzaga is the same team as last year’s. They’re better. The Bulldogs are 23-1 SU, and 15-9 ATS in its previous 24 contests and its only loss during this hot streak came against Saint Mary’s in the WCC tournament final.

These are two of the most athletic teams in the tournament, so you’re going to see players banging up against each other trying to gain an advantage. Though Gonzaga may have a slight edge, the Seminoles will hold their own, and if Terrance Mann goes hot, you may even see another upset this year.

Pick: Florida State +7.5

No. 2 Kentucky vs. No. 3 Houston

  • When: March 29, 2019, 9:57 PM ET
  • Where: Sprint Center
  • Point Spread: Kentucky -2.5
  • Total:134.5

Analysis: The Sweet 16 has been a long time coming for the Cougars. It’s been 35 years since Houston making an appearance in this round. However, under John Calipari, the Wildcats have had tremendous success. Kentucky is 6-1 in Sweet 16 games in the Calipari era, with the sole loss to Kansas State in last year’s game.

The Wildcats will need another big performance from forward Reid Travis if they’re to defeat Houston though, and if he happens to have an off night, Kentucky will be in for a grueling undertaking against a Cougars team that’s packed with experience.

Pick: Kentucky -2.5
