If You’re Betting on the Washington Huskies

Despite finishing the season with a 10-2 record, the Washington Huskies finished second in the Pac-12 North, due to a loss to the Stanford Cardinal, who finished with an identical conference record but had the tiebreaker edge.

Since their loss to the Cardinal, the Huskies won their final two games of the season, including their rivalry game over the Washington State Cougars, which ended their hopes of winning the division.

Now, the Huskies will be trying to end the season on a high note against a Penn State team that can score a lot of points.

Washington’s offense is driven by the big trio of Jake Browning, Myles Gaskin, and Dante Pettis.

Though Browning is the player who deservedly gets most of the attention, Gaskin is one of the most underrated running backs in the nation who has rushed for 1,282 yards and a career-high 19 TDs this season.

Pettis is also an explosive player who can light things up as the nation’s top punt returner and the Huskies’ leading receiver. However, Pettis left the Apple Cup with an apparent leg injury and his status is up in the air.

The Huskies, who scored 36.9 points per game during the season, will be going against a very good defense, with the Nittany Lions allowing 15.5 points per game, which is 7th in the country.

Their defense will also be tested against a Penn State team that was the 61st best rushing team in the league thanks to all-purpose running back Saquon Barkley, who finished the season with 1,134 rushing yards and 594 receiving yards with 19 touchdowns.

If the Huskies can shut Barkley down, they will themselves a good chance to win the game because they can send a pass rush whenever Trace McSorley drops back and force him into making bad throws.

If You’re Betting On The Penn State Nittany Lions

The Nittany Lions were hoping to make it to the playoffs this year, but two consecutive losses to the Ohio State Buckeyes and Michigan State Wolverines ended their Big Ten championship hopes as well as their playoff chances.

Penn State has since rebounded from the two losses and finished the season with a three-game winning streak.

Penn State’s offensive motor is Saquon Barkley, who remains one of the most dynamic players in the sport even with his Heisman hopes quickly evaporating.

The running back is averaging seven yards per touch on offense, including 12.6 yards per catch. Barkley’s numbers are on a downward decline, but quarterback Trace McSorley has picked up the slack, completing 68.9 percent of his passes with 7 TDS and 0 INTs in the past 3.

Against the Huskies, the Nittany Lions will rely heavily on their Heisman finalist Barkley against a team they know they will be able to run against.

Even if the Huskies give up some rushing yards, the Nittany Lions will still have a hard time scoring points against the 6th best defense in the country, which gave up an average of 14.5 points per game.

If the Huskies are able to bottle up Barkley, McSorley is up to the task of carrying the offense, but his offensive line will have to give him some time to find the open receiver, especially if the Huskies keep sending blitzes.

The Nittany Lions will be going into this game with a lot of confidence because they had one of the toughest schedules in the country this year and lost only two games by four points combined.

With McSorley and Barkley leaving after this season, the team would love to send them off with a win at the 2017 Fiesta Bowl.

Washington Huskies vs Penn State Nittany Lions Betting Trends

  • Penn State is 16-4-1 ATS in its last 21 games.
  • Penn State is 1-4 SU in its last 5 games in bowl season.
  • The total has gone OVER in 5 of Penn State's last 6 games.
  • Washington is 5-2 ATS in its last 7 games after a win.
  • Washington is 4-0 SU in its last 4 games against the Big Ten.
  • The total has gone OVER in Washington's last 3 games.
  • The underdog is 8-2 ATS in the last 10 Fiesta Bowls.

Pick and Prediction: The Nittany Lions are favored to win this game by 2 points. The over/under on total points scored is 55 points. There are a few factors working against both offenses in this one. First, both teams are in the top 10 in the nation in points allowed. Second, both Penn State and Washington watched their offensive coordinators take head coaching jobs and will be replacing them in this game. The Nittany Lions have more depth and played a tougher schedule. They were also better against the spread than the Huskies, so I expect them to cover the spread. Both squads averaged over 36 points per game through the season, and have had a tendency to go OVER – with the programs going a combined 9-2 since Week 8, but I’m taking the under on this one.
