If You’re Betting On The UCF Golden Knights

The biggest knock against the Golden Knights this season was that they didn’t play any of the big Power 5 teams.

While that was true, the team did defeat a ranked Memphis team twice and rivals USF, who finished 23rd in the rankings.

Since their season ended, the Golden Knights lost head coach Scott Frost, who returned home to Nebraska to coach the Cornhuskers.

Scott Frost’s importance to UCF’s program cannot be understated, it has been paramount.

UCF closed out 2015 without a win and was in complete disarray. Within two seasons, Frost had the Knights as an undefeated team and ranked No. 12 in the nation.

Frost’s biggest success story has been on quarterback McKenzie Milton’s transformation. The Knight’s signal-caller has been a perfect fit in the offense, completing 69.2 percent of his passes with 35 touchdowns and nine interceptions while adding almost 500 yards on the ground.

Tre’Quan Smith, Milton’s favorite target, has averaged 20 yards per reception and has racked up 120-plus receiving yards in three of the past five games.

Despite being hired to become the new head coach of Nebraska, Frost said he would coach the team in the bowl game, but since UCF hired Josh Heupel as head coach, it is unclear who will coach the team against the Tigers.

Despite the leadership issue, the Golden Knights will be coming into this game trying to prove they not only belong in the 2017 Peach Bowl, but they also should have been included in the CFP.

UCF had the best offense in the country this season, averaging 49.4 points per game. It will be interesting to see how the Tigers defend against a team that passes and runs the ball well.

Even though their defense was overshadowed by their offense, the Golden Knights did a pretty good job this season, giving up an average of 25.2 points per game, which was 53rd.

Their defense will be tested by Auburn’s offense, but the Golden Knights should be capable of holding their own in this game.

If You’re Betting On The Auburn Tigers

The Tigers almost made it into the final four, but defeating two #1 ranked teams in three weeks took its toll as a banged up Tigers team couldn’t keep up with the Georgia Bulldogs in the SEC Championship game.

Auburn is UCF’s the toughest opponent. The Tigers rank in the top 25 in the nation in both scoring offense and defense while holding victories over Georgia and Alabama.

Auburn’s defense is excellent at stopping the pass, ranking 13th in the nation in passing yards allowed and 14th in sacks.

Also, their offense is in the capable hands of Jarrett Stidham. Be sure to keep an eye on running back Kerryon Johnson, who played through pain in the SEC championship game but struggled.

With the playoffs out of the picture, the best the Tigers can do is to try to end their season on a high note in the venue their championship dreams disappeared.

Auburn’s defense rightfully got most of the attention this season, because they held opponents to 17.3 points per game. However, their offense was also very good, with the team averaging 34.4 points per contest, which was 28th in the country.

After having a few weeks off, a healthier Tigers team will be trying to show the rest of the college football world what they would have done if they made the playoffs.

The Tigers will be trying to make a statement against a UCF team many expect them to beat. However, they will need to be careful not to overlook the Golden Knights, if they don’t want to be embarrassed in their final game of the season.

Golden Knights vs Tigers Betting Trends

  • UCF is 0-3 SU in its last 3 games against Auburn.
  • Auburn is 9-1 SU in its last 10 games after a loss.
  • The total has gone UNDER in 8 of Auburn’s last 11 games in bowl season.
  • The total has gone OVER in 7 of Auburn's last 10 games.
  • UCF is 4-1 ATS in its last 5 games as an underdog.
  • UCF has played an SEC school 8 times since 2005 – the UNDER is 7-0-1 in those games.

Pick and Prediction: The Tigers are favored to win this game by 9.5 points. The over/under on total points scored is 67. The Golden Knights were better than the Tigers against the spread, but the uncertainty about who will coach the team makes me wary of them. Take UCF +9.5 and the under.
