Why Bet on the Fighting Irish?

Notre Dame kicks off the new season with fourteen starters that went 12-0 during last year’s regular season. However, they were then crushed 30-3 by Clemson in the College Football Playoff semifinals.

As it stands, the Fighting Irish are an 18-point favorite to beat the Cardinals, which isn’t surprising considering the amount of talent ND has on their offense. Eight offensive starters return this year, including quarterback Ian Book, who led the Irish’s offense to tally up an average 463 yards and 33.8 points per game.

Book will also have one of his favorite targets last season in wide receiver Chase Claypool. Last year, Claypool grabbed 50 passes for 639 yards and four touchdowns.

Why Bet on the Cardinals?

It will be Notre Dame’s first game under the leadership of the newly appointed head coach, Scott Satterfield, who previously led Appalachian State for six seasons, going 51-24 in that time.

Though the Fighting Irish are favorites, there is an argument against whether Notre Dame can cover the 14-point spread. The Cardinals is an experienced team that’s returning plenty of last year’s players.

Eleven defensive players return this year and should do well under new coordinator Bryan Brown. Brown previously led Appalachian State last season to being the fourth-best scoring defense in the FBS (15.5 PPG).

The Cardinals also have talent on their offense, including Mekhi Becton, who is one of the best offensive tackles in the nation.

Betting Trends

  • Notre Dame is 13-1 SU in their last 14 games.
  • The total has gone OVER in 4 of Notre Dame's last five games on the road.
  • Notre Dame is 5-1 SU in their last six games against an opponent in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
  • Louisville is 0-7 ATS in their last seven games.
  • The total has gone OVER in 7 of Louisville's last eight games.
  • Louisville is 0-9 SU in their last nine games.

Insider Prediction:  This is a hard pick because it’s expecting Louisville to keep the score close and make a late scoring drive late in the game. Notre Dame is on the hunt to make it to the playoffs, and I think they’ll come out gunning.

Pick: Notre Dame -18
