How To Bet Patriots vs. Lions 2019 NFL Preseason Week 1

You are here

Patriots vs. Lions Preseason Week 1
  • It will be the 10th preseason game between the Patriots and Lions with Detroit holding a 6-3 in the series.
  • The last time these two teams met, the Patriots won 30-28 in Detroit

Though the Lions have won the preseason series 6-3, they had a lackluster season last year under head coach Matt Patricia’s first year at the helm.

Meanwhile, the Patriots might be suffering from Super Bowl hangover but will this stop them from repeating? Let’s take a look at what to expect in this game and where there can be value in betting.

Betting on the Patriots?

It’s hard to deny the Patriots dynasty after they won the Super Bowl, once more, last year. Last season, they went 11-5 and ranked fourth in scoring with 27.3 points per game while allowing just 20.3 PPG.

The team returns with most of their core players in the ranks including Tom Brady, arguably the best quarterback in recent league history. Even if they lost Rob Gronkowski to retirement, they picked up Demaryius Thomas who should be back for the regular season after tearing his Achilles last December. Along with Julian Edelman, Josh Gordon, Phillip Dorsett, Bruce Ellington, and Maurice Harris, New England’s receiver corps appear ready to have a successful season.

On the defense, the Patriots have most of last year’s roster with the addition of former Philadelphia Eagle veteran defensive end Michael Bennett.

Team Offensive Stats

  • Total Score27.74
  • Passing Yards: 273.79
  • Rushing Yards: 132.74
  • Time on Field: 32:15
  • Number of Plays: 69.11
  • Yards per Play: 5.88

Betting on the Lions?

The Lions had a lackluster season last year, going 6-18 in former Pats’ defensive coordinator Matt Patricia. However, Patricia is no stranger to how the Patriots to things so the Lions will have a bit of an edge in this game.

Matthew Stafford is back to lead the offense after having a decent season last year, passing for 3,777 yards with 21 TDs and 11 interceptions. Detroit picked up Danny Amendola and drafted former Iowa tight end T.J. Hockenson to boost the Lions’ passing game. They also should get a useful contribution in the ground game from second-year running back Kerryon Johnson who earned 641 yards and three touchdowns last year.

Team Offense Stats

  • Total Score: 20.25
  • Passing Yards:  223.50
  • Rushing Yards: 103.75
  • Time on Field: 31:23
  • Number of Plays: 63.69
  • Yards per Play: 5.14

Betting Trends

  • New England is 4-1 ATS in their last five games.
  • The total has gone UNDER in 9 of New England's last 12 games.
  • New England is 5-0 SU in their last five games.
  • The total has gone UNDER in 7 of Detroit's last seven games.
  • Detroit is 3-7 SU in their last ten games.
  • The total has gone UNDER in 5 of Detroit's last five games at home.

Insider Prediction: I doubt Tom Brady or Matt Stafford will take the field for this game. At best, they’ll take the field for a few minutes to make an appearance. The Lions lost three of their four preseason games last year, while the Pats won their three. I have to go with New England on this one, I think they’ll test their receiving corps, and I doubt the Lions will put up much of a fight.

Pick: Patriots ATS -1.5
