The Toronto Maple Leafs have one of the most exciting offensive teams in the National Hockey League but that is offset by a defense that has allowed the most shots in the National Hockey League and leaving their fine goaltenders Jonathan Bernier and James Reimer hung out to dry more often than not. It is offense that has kept the Toronto Maple Leafs in playoff contention and it is defense that will likely prevent the Toronto Maple Leafs from advancing far in the Stanley Cup Playoffs which start in a couple of weeks.
Defense a Drag
The Toronto Maple Leafs ranked 10th in the NHL for goal scoring but the defense ranked dead last in shots allowed and 26th for goals allowed as it proved to be a liability with the NHL lines, especially in road games. The defensive issues of course remind everyone of last year’s epic collapse in the 3rd period of the 7th game at the Boston Bruins that was one of the greatest comebacks in the history of the NHL playoffs but one of the darkest moments in the history of the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Coming Up
The Toronto Maple Leafs host the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday, March 29 which begins a 4 game home stand. The Calgary Flames visit on Tuesday, April 1, the Boston Bruins visit on Thursday, April 3, and the Winnipeg Jets visit on Saturday, April 5 before the Maple Leafs hit the road for their final 3 games of the regular season at the Tampa Bay Lightning, the Florida Panthers, and the Ottawa Senators
Handicapper’s Notebook
The Toronto Maple Leafs have been a poor value on the road this year and that trend is yet to change as they got the money in just 7 out of their last 20 away games with 7 out of their last 10 away games going over the total. The opposite has been true when the Toronto Maple Leafs play at home however as they have come away with the money in 13 out of their last 20 home games with just 3 out of their last 13 home games going under the total.
