NHL's Best Bets This Week Feature Crosby & Ovechkin

Sidney Crosby and Alexander Ovechkin will look to lead the Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals to victories in their respective matchups this week as the NHL gets set for its upcoming all-star break.

If you’re looking to increase your annul NHL betting bankroll, then let’s get started with my trio of picks for the coming week.

Crosby, Penguins, Ovechkin, Capitals Bookend Trio of NHL Picks Of The Week

St. Louis at Pittsburgh
When: Tuesday, January 24 at 7:00 PM ET
Where: PPG Paints Arena, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
TV: NBCS, ROOT

Analysis: Heading into Monday night, the St. Louis Blues (23-19-4-1) had dropped three straight, including their humbling 5-3 loss to lowly Winnipeg on Saturday. Conversely, Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins (30-11-4-1) have won four straight and seven of their last 10 games overall.

More importantly, the Penguins are ranked firs in scoring (3.6 gpg) and second in power play success (23.7) while St. Louis ranks a respectable 10th in scoring, the Blues are just 26th in goals allowed (3.1). St. Louis is pretty solid this season, but they’re not nearly as talented or as explosive as the defending Stanley Cup champion Penguins.

The Pens have won five straight at home and will make it six by beating the Blues in this one!

Pick: Pittsburgh 4 St. Louis 2

Philadelphia at NY Rangers
When: Wednesday, January 25 at 8:00 PM ET
Where: Madison Square Garden, Manhattan, New York
TV: NBCS

Analysis: Heading into Monday night, the Philadelphia Flyers (23-19-2-4) snapped a three-game losing streak by squeaking past the New York Islanders 3-2 in overtime on Sunday.

The NY Rangers (30-16-0-1) have won two straight heading into the new week including their hard-fought 1-0 overtime win over Detroit on Sunday.

For this matchup of Eastern Conference cup hopefuls, I’m going to urge you to simply back the Rangers as they are the better team in all three phases. New York is ranked a stellar second in scoring (3.4 gpg) and 12th in goals allowed while Philadelphia is ranked below their longtime rivals in both categories.

The Flyers have plenty of young talent, but they’ve also lost their way after a fantastic start and just look out of sorts the last eight weeks or so.  The Rangers win a thriller that plays over the total.

Pick: NY Rangers 5 Philadelphia 3

Washington at New Jersey
When: Thursday, January 26 at 7:00 PM ET
Where: Prudential Center,
TV: CSMA, MSG

Analysis: Washington (31-9-2-4) has won two straight since losing to Pittsburgh 8-7 in the most exciting hockey match I’ve seen in a decade one week ago and come into this contest off a 4-3 overtime win over Dallas on Saturday that helped them move to a near-perfect 9-1 over their last 10 games.

New Jersey (20-19-7-2) is playing its best hockey of the season right now, having won four of their last five matches, including their convincing 4-1 win over Philadelphia on Saturday. While I’ve been impressed with Jersey’s recent improved play, they’ve got a long way to go before they can even come close to challenging the insanely explosive Capitals.

New Jersey ranks 28th in scoring and 19th in defense to Washington’s fifth-ranked offense and league-leading defense (2.1 gpg). I’m expecting Alex Ovechkin and company to have this game well in hand by the start of the third period!

Pick: Washington 6 New Jersey 2
