UFC 183: Silva vs. Diaz

UFC 183: Silva vs. Diaz

Former UFC Middleweight champion Anderson Silva, will be making his long awaited return to the Octagon on Saturday, when he faces off against former Strikeforce Welterweight champion, Nick Diaz, in what will likely be one of the best UFC fights in recent history.

Anderson "The Spider" Silva (33-6-0) vs. Nick Diaz (27-9-1), UFC 183, Saturday, Jan 31, 10 PM. ET. PPV.

Anderson Silva is considered by a lot of people to be the greatest UFC champion ever, because of the way he dominated the middleweight division, winning 16 straight fights, and making 10 successful title defenses. The streak ended in July 2013, when he lost his belt to Chris Weidman, and in their rematch, he broke his leg, while attempting to check a leg kick from Weidman, and hasn't been back in the Octagon since, and he is making his return at the upcoming UFC event.

Nick Diaz has always been an unpredictable fighter, who has also had his share of drama inside and outside the octagon, and is also making a return in the next UFC event. After a successful run at Strikeforce, where he became the Strikeforce Welterweight champion, Diaz made his second return to the UFC in 2011, and defeated B.J. Penn at UFC 137, earning "Fight of The Night" honors. In his next two UFC fights, he got a chance to compete for the UFC Welterweight belt against Carlos Condit and Georges St-Pierre, but lost both fights in unanimous decisions.

Fight Breakdown

This will be the first time both fighters will meet, so there isn't any previous fight to use as a reference, which has made this a tricky fight for people who are trying to do some UFC betting this weekend. At 39 years old, experts don't know how effective Silva will be in his return, especially after a long layoff, which he spent most of rehabbing from his injury, instead of training.

Diaz has actually been out of action much longer than Silva, because he "Retired," after losing his championship fight to GSP, in March 2013. He is only 31 years old, and is expected to be in better shape when the two meet this UFC Saturday, making it very tempting to bet on him.

The fight will likely be kept standing up, because both fighters are very good strikers. Nick Diaz should have a slight edge in the striking department, because his striking is good enough to allow him to become a professional boxer, even if it was just for one fight.

If the fight goes to the ground, it also becomes a wash, because both fighters are black belts in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, so this fight comes down to who has the better technique, and who wants it more.

UFC Betting

For those that are interested in betting on UFC fights on Saturday, the money line is heavily in favor of Anderson Silva, at -450, while the odds of Diaz winning is at +350.

In the past, when Silva was dominating opponents, that would be an easy bet to make, but in his first fight in over a year, after such a major injury, I hesitate to take the line. A big reason I would hesitate, is the fact that Diaz is known for his legendary stamina, and won't tire out during this fight. In his last couple of fights, Silva showed some signs of fatigue, and will definitely be rusty in his return, so I think he will run out of gas if this fight goes the distance. I'm going to go with Nick Diaz to win the fight on UFC Saturday.
