England - World Cup 2018

You are here

The good news for England is that the worst is probably behind them coming into the 2018 World Cup.

After having suffered every type of embarrassment possible on the world stage in the last eight years, they have hit the 'reset' button and will compete in Russia 2018 with everything to gain.

England has been impressive in all of their qualifying matches, winning every single one in an 8-2-0 run. While they have had a number of managerial changes over the last 4 years, their current coach Gareth Southgate seems to have a good grasp of the team heading into this tournament.

Will England Make It Back To World Cup Royalty?

While England's history in the game of football may be one of the most decorated -they invented the sport, after all- their results in the last eight years have not been all that glorious.

In 2010 they nabbed the second spot in the group stage despite only having scored two goals through three games and went on to get hammered 4-1 by Germany in the round of 16.

In 2014, England was in a difficult group and wound up losing their two first games to Uruguay and Italy before going scoreless against Costa Rica in the final game. Two years later, England would suffer another embarrassment when they lost 2-1 to Iceland in the first knockout stage of the European Cup.

England’s Road To The 2018 World Cup

England would like to put that all behind them now as they head into Russia for the 2018 World Cup.

Their undefeated run qualifying was an impressive feat, as they did not give up a goal through the first five matches before a 2-2 tie with Scotland.

They rebounded from that game by thrashing Malta 4-0 and never looked back, winning the last 4 games of qualifying. During that span, they were led by Harry Kane, who netted 5 goals. Overall, 11 different players for England contributed to scoring during the qualifying stage.

Perhaps more impressively for England is that they have played four extremely difficult friendly matches since, against Germany, Brazil, the Netherlands and Italy, and have not lost a single match, going 1-3-0.

How Does The England World Cup 2018 Squad Stack Up?

Things bode well for Coach Southgate and his crew, who will look to continue the success they have had with their 3-4-2-1 formation.

Kane will be tasked with leading the team through the first round of the World Cup. Joining him are Kieran Trippier, Kyle Walker, John Stones, Joe Gomez, and Danny Rose as a back 5.

England Odds To Win World Cup 2018

If England can continue their upward trajectory, there is no reason they can't make it out of their group in Russia. Tunisia and Panama should be fairly easy to defeat and Belgium sticks out as the only challenge.

England is a slight underdog to Belgium in that game, the last of the group stage for both of those teams. It will most likely decide who comes out first in that group. Once in the knockout stages, England will likely have to face Poland or Colombia, both of which are ranked higher in the FIFA rankings, with Poland obviously being the tougher draw.
