France World Cup 2018

You are here

There is a tremendous amount of hype surrounding this French team, and rightfully so; they are packed with talent and youth.

Few teams in this World Cup possess the arsenal that France has at its disposal, and they will try to use Russia 2018 to vault themselves back into the conversation as one of the world's elite football powers.

Manager Didier Deschamps has had ample success since taking over in 2012, coaching France to a 46-13-15 record, but has yet to win a Major Trophy. His team finished runners-up to Portugal in the 2016 Euro Cup and was edged out 1-0 by Germany in the quarterfinals of the 2014 World Cup.

France’s Long World Cup History

France has qualified for 16 of the 21 World Cups since the tournament began in 1930, but they have only won the tournament once, in 1998 as the host nation.

In 2006, they returned to the finals, losing a famously contested 5-3 penalty shot match against Italy.

What Was France’s Road To The 2018 World Cup?

In qualifying for 2018, France won group A with a 7-2-1 record. Their only loss was against Sweden, the runner-up in that group. Their two draws were against Belarus and Luxembourg, however, which is troubling for a team that is aiming for a championship.

Nine different players scored for Les Bleus during qualifying, but no individual player tallied more than four, which was the total tallied by Oliver Giroud and Antoine Griezmann.

Since their qualification for Russia 2018, France has played 4 friendlies, going 2-1-1 with wins against Wales and Russia and a 2-2 tie with Germany, and a sole loss to Colombia.

How Does The France World Cup 2018 Squad Stack Up?

With the talent that this team possesses, Captain Hugo Loris just needs to get Les Blues in the mental state needed to advance through the grueling tournament.

France will be counting on Loris as well as international stars Griezmann and Paul Pogba to help lead the way. With a supporting cast of Giroud, Kylian Mbappé, and Ousmane Dembélé behind them, they have all the resources necessary. Defensively they are shored up by Laurel Koscielny and Samuel Umtiti, who are both major names for their clubs in EPL and La Liga.

France Odds To Win World Cup 2018

Odds-wise, France has one of the easiest routes to the final in this World Cup if the groups play out as they should.

At 1/14 odds-on favorites to make the knockout stage, France is almost guaranteed to make it out of their group, as no team in group C can match their star power.

As far as advancing through the rest of the tournament, they have the third-best chance for winning the World Cup with 6/1 odds. Assuming they win their group, they will be playing the second-place team from Group D, which will likely be Croatia, but if Argentina fails to place first in the D group, France could end up playing Messi & company in the round of 16.
