Mexico - World Cup 2018

You are here

"La Tri" is always just on the verge of making something happen at the World Cup but have a hard time getting past the Round of 16.

This year will be no exception, as they will have to fight Sweden for the second spot in their group and will likely face Brazil in the round of 16 if the South American squad fails to come out on top of their group.

The good news for Mexico is that they have a very capable attack made up of experienced players in their prime, so if anyone dares take them lightly, they will be in for a surprise.

Mexico’s Great World Cup History

Mexico is among the greatest football nations on the planet. As World Cup participants in 16 of 21 tournaments, they have compiled an overall record of 14-14-25, which is good enough for 13th place all time.

They’ve had two quarter final appearances, in 1970 and 1986, and have advanced to the round of 16 in each of the last six World Cup tournaments. Historically they are the best team in the CONCACAF with 10 CONCACAF/Gold Cup titles, one Confederations Cup title, and one Olympic Gold Medal. They have also finished as runners-up twice in the Copa America.

Mexico’s Road To The 2018 World Cup

Qualifying for 2018 was not much of a problem for Mexico, as they finished atop the CONCACAF standings with one game to spare.

Overall, their record was 11-4-1 through two rounds, the loss coming against Honduras after they had already qualified. Hirving Lozano lead them in scoring with four during the qualifying rounds. In total, 9 different players chipped in with goals.

While everything looks good going into Russia 2018, Mexico has had a couple of hiccups recently, losing a quarter final match in the Copa America Centenario 7-1 to Chile and dropping the Confederations Cup semis to Germany 4-1.

How Does Mexico’s World Cup 2018 Squad Stack Up?

This year they are once more led by Javier Hernandez, West Ham United’s superstar. He will be joined up front by Lozano and Jesus Corona for sure, but there are other players in the pipeline who may get a shot at playing, such as Giovani Dos Santos and Oribe Peralta.

Andres Guardado serves as a versatile forward who plays mostly at midfield but can easily switch to wing or back. Hector Moreno is an experienced defender having spent plenty of time in Europe while Guillermo Ochoa should start in goal. Manager Juan Carlos Osorio will likely have his team playing a 4-3-3 formation.

Mexico Odds To Win World Cup 2018

Mexico will have to battle to get out of their group, and even if they do, don't count on them going any further.

They are on more or less even footing with Sweden at 6/4 odds on favorites vs the Swedes in group play. That game will mean everything to Mexico in regards to whether Russia 2018 is a success or not. If they do advance to the round of 16, they are almost sure to face Brazil, a much more complicated opponent.
