Peru World Cup 2018

You are here

A return to the World Cup after 36 years, a drawn out qualification process, and a doping scandal whose trial involved mummified children all were part of the soap opera that got Peru back into the World Cup.

The last time this country made the cut was in Spain 82', where they went winless in the group stage.

Nonetheless, this is a passionate soccer nation that takes the game as seriously as any of their South American Neighbors, so it is no small deal that they are making an appearance in Russia.

As a smaller team that prides itself on short passes and ball control, Peru will hope to nab the second spot in their group and make it to the round of 16.

An Old Soccer History Without Many World Cup Appearances

Peru has a rich soccer history dating from the late 1800's. The FPF (Peruvian Football Federation) was formed in 1922 and joined the CONMEBOL in 1925. The National team took part in the inaugural World Cup in 1930 and continued having relative success throughout that decade.

The FPF did not jump into the world cup picture again until the 1970's when it made the Quarter-finals of the 1970 world cup, losing to eventual champion Brazil. They went on to win the 1975 Copa America and qualified for the next two World Cups after that in Argentina 78' and Spain 82'

Peru’s Road To The 2018 World Cup

Fast forward to Russia 2018 and Peru is back in the mix after having a wild qualifying ride.

Stuck in what is arguably the most competitive region in the sport, the Peruvians finished 5th in the CONMEBOL standings, one point behind Colombia.

Their qualifying run was highlighted by two draws against powerhouse Argentina and a 2-1 win over Uruguay. Paolo Guerrero and Edison Flores lead the team in scoring with 5 goals apiece.

Peru Odds To Win World Cup 2018

While Peru will have a full squad participating at Russia 2018, that does not mean they will have an easy route out of the group stage.

They are ranked 11th, just ahead of Denmark, but most odds have Denmark making it out of the group, as the odds-on favorites by a slight margin. Denmark vs Peru is the first match of Group C and could very well decide Peru's fate.

If they do make it out of the group stage in second place, they will play the first place team from D, which could be Argentina, a team which they tied twice during qualifying.
