Poland - World Cup 2018

You are here

Russia 2018 will be Robert Lewandowski's stage to shine. Too often underrated, as one of the great players in the game, Lewandowski will get his best chance yet to let the world know what he can do with a ball at his feet.

Poland is currently ranked 6th in the world by FIFA, tied with Spain, which is revealing of how this team is overlooked.

While Spain is heralded in the conversation as a team that might win the World Cup this year, Poland is mostly an afterthought. Expect this oversight to be a factor in Poland's 2018 World Cup run.

Poland’s World Cup History

Poland has competed in seven World Cups, the last one being in 2006 when they bowed out at the group stage for the second time in a row.

Their best showings on the world stage came in 1974 and 1982 when the team placed third on both occasions. In 74 they beat England to move on to the Semifinals, where they were edged out 1-0 in a close match with Germany but managed to beat Brazil for the third-place title.

In 1982, Poland again made it to the semifinals after bowing out in the second at the 78' cup. They lost to Italy before going on to beat France for the third-place consolation.

Poland’s Road To The 2018 World Cup

This year, Poland is back after a 12-year absence. The country has been on an upswing since the 2014 World Cup qualifiers, having made it to the quarter-finals of the Euro 2016 tournament, where they beat Germany for the first time in their history during the qualifying stages.

Poland began qualifying for Russia 2018 later that year and was put in a group where no team had appeared in the 2014 tournament, which greatly helped Poland's chances of returning to the World Cup.

Robert Lewandowski took this as his opportunity to shine and netted hat tricks in three different games (Denmark, Romania, and Armenia). He finished the qualifying round tied with Ahmed Khalil of the UAE for the lead in goals among all participating nations with 16.

How Does The Poland World Cup 2018 Squad Stack Up?

Poland is not just Lewandowski. While he may be the go-to man for scoring, he is supported by a very capable squad that has achieved some remarkable results in the past few years.

They typically play a formation with three central defenders. Kamil Glik and Grzegorz Krychowiak will be key players in that position, while Wojciech Szczesny is as dependable of a Goaltender as you can have in the World Cup.

Poland Odds To Win World Cup 2018

Poland is in a group they are likely to win, so the question will be how far can they make it in the ensuing rounds. At 40/1 odds to win everything, they sit more or less in the middle of the pack.

This could mean that they are primed for upsetting some of the higher-ranked teams, or it could mean that they are a one-man show that has had success mostly due to drawing favorable opponents.
